About In Between Seasons

In 2021 the world as we know it changed. The government collapsed, and the worst characteristics of human nature were shown as the world fell into ruins. Years after The Fall, the Tribes that were established are still at war. They still fight to keep what they pillaged, and most of all, they fight to keep their lies a secret. In a world filled with deception, nothing is as it seems.
I was born into this world.
Hunter Marks was molded into this world; a General— a person cold and harsh. A person meant to kill me.
We were told to just believe.
We were taught to never question.
We’re supposed to be robots, and accept our roles in this altered society.
Too bad Hunter and I don’t follow the rules.
And we’re a hell of a lot stronger than they ever thought possible.
They’ve been searching for the world’s deadliest weapon.
It’s me.
And I’m not following the leader any more.

My Review

My Rating: 4  Stars

“I felt safer with this man than I ever felt with those who were supposed to love me.”

Post-apocalyptic fiction meets Romeo and Juliet in this exciting forbidden romance. It’s a unique story of two young people trapped in a harsh reality they have no control over; they are important players in a violent game, and their romance put their lives in jeopardy.

There were things I loved about this story and a few things I had trouble with. I’m a fan of post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction and enjoyed the plot set up: forbidden romance set in a future world of warring tribes. Hunter and Kate’s romance is another strength to the story with a slow build-up and plenty of sexual tension. Their relationship is full of intense emotional moments broken up by witty banter and just enough humor to balance it all out. The story as a whole has action, suspense, and adventure as well as plenty of plot twists and turns to keep it exciting. The overall pacing of the story is what left me wanting more. In the middle of the book the plot slows down a bit and things start to feel a little repetitive. It did serve to build anticipation, answer important questions, and solidify Hunter and Kate’s relationship, but it felt long in comparison to the pulse-pounding, dramatic, but relatively short ending section.

The main characters were another strength in the story. Kate is a strong female, but very relatable and not without her vulnerable moments. She fits perfectly with the stoic, smart, (and super gorgeous!) warrior that is Hunter Marks. They have genuine chemistry and I couldn’t help but want to see this couple find a way to be together even though their relationship seems impossible, no to mention deadly.

Overall, this is an exciting, romantic, and engaging addition to the post-apocalyptic genre. Though this book has a satisfying conclusion, there is the opportunity for the story to continue. I would love to read more of these characters and their story, and see what else their world has to offer.

“Love hadn’t existed in this world. Only hate, deceit and lies, but by letting him in I’d let all of that crumble. By letting me in he’d done the same, and now we were engaged in an even deadlier game than  before.”

By: Merissa McCain & Margaret Madigan

Lyrical Press

Releasing October 1st, 2013

One day her prince would come…disguised as a zombie-killer.

Having been disgraced and tossed out by her own scientific community, Gwyn is convinced she can develop a cure for a SuperVirus that has turned the Infected into zombies. By pure luck and determination, she has survived on her own for years, but while out scavenging, a clash with the local zombies leaves her potentially infected. Now, running out of time, she needs help and takes a chance on a hero for hire.

Rafe loves the apocalypse. Since the world went to hell, everything’s come up roses for him. Having procured a mansion in the Hollywood hills, adopted a slew of homeless boys and one cantankerous but useful Doc, Mr. Charming is benefiting from the nasty zombie infestation. His job? Killing the bastards, which he considers fun anyway.

Gwyn Snow needs Rafe Charming to help retrieve her research from the Paragon Pharmaceuticals lab, also known as Zombie Central. Believing she can yet save the world, Gwyn makes Rafe question what’s right and what’s worth the fight.

My Review

My Rating: 4 Stars

SO. MUCH. FUN. An entertaining twist on Snow White and the Seven Dwarves set in a post-apocalyptic world that is completely overrun by zombies. Gwyn Snow just might have a cure for the zombie virus, but it’s going to take all of the combined wits, will, and bravery of her new family of Rafe Charming, Doc, and the orphaned boys to make it happen. Gwyn must risk her own life for the chance to save many.

I love fairytale rewrites and this one was great! Loosely based and with the added fun of zombie gore, lots of action, and some spicy-sweet love-making. The story is relatively short and very fast-paced, but everything is there: endearing characters, a good bit of exciting violence, and a sweet romance complete with the fairytale ending.

Who doesn’t love a story with a hot zombie hunting hero and an incredibly brave heroine who finds love and family and manages to find a way to save the world?

” ‘And I always keep my promises, Princess.’ I dropped a kiss on her lips. ‘Guaranteed.’ “

When not otherwise occupied with planning world domination, I love to read, write, drink strong coffee and eat dark chocolate–not necessarily in that order and sometimes all at once.  I’m a voracious reader, and will devour any type of good fiction I can get my hands on, but I’m particularly partial to happy endings.

I write with a partner (Margaret Madigan) and on my own. We love to hear from our readers, so please shoot us an email at or

Margaret Madigan

Hi. I’m Margaret Madigan. Or M.K.D. Bail, depending on what literary genre we’re talking about.

I live in the vast Northern Plains where it’s quiet and mostly empty, and very conducive to letting my imagination run wild. As a result, I have difficulty focusing on just one genre of storytelling. Of course, I love romance, so I write a lot of that, but I also write science fiction, a bit of horror, and dabble in other genres just for the fun of it.

When I’m not writing you’ll find me in a college classroom teaching English, or working as a literary agent for an amazing agency…and of course enjoying time with my family.

About the Book

In the future dystopian society of Cabal, the government instills equality for all and offers its citizens the perfect system. There is food, shelter and jobs for everyone. Following her eighteenth birthday, Olivia Parker accepts her requirement to marry her childhood best friend, Joshua Warren, and is eager to start her work assignment and new life when it all comes abruptly to an end as she’s arrested and thrown in prison. The only crime committed, her existence.

Olivia is unlike the rest of the world born not from “The Day of the Chosen.” The truth haunts the government and puts her life in grave danger as one simple fact would destroy the perfect system. With Joshua’s help, Olivia breaks free of prison and is forced on the run. Together they set out to find the promised rebel town in search of a new home and new life together. Their situation seems less than promising as they reach the town of Haven. New rules and customs must be adhered to in order to stay. My Review

My Rating: 4 Stars

“You can overcome anything… short of death.”

A must read for YA/NA Dystopian fans, Branded follows Lexi Hamilton in to the Hole, the “prison system” of a future United States. With the current justice system gone, citizens are branded sinners, and in Lexi’s case, she is innocent of her accused crimes. But that doesn’t matter. In the Hole, she faces certain death and only person standing between her and that death is Cole, the guard assigned to protect her.

Over a short period of time, she must learn to survive this place. What is immediately apparent is that Lexi is and always has been a survivor. As the story unravels, so does the story of Lexi’s past. We learn just how strong she is. A reader can’t help but admire the fact that she’s still standing, still functioning. Occasionally she cracks, and her vulnerability shows, but she always picks herself back up. Because she is a victim of circumstance, her fate always controlled by others, I was so incredibly proud when she finally stands up for herself, and chooses to fight for what she believes in, no matter what the cost.

And there are the others that Lexi meets in the Hole. Alyssa, the young girl who teaches Lexi how to love and provides some of the most touching and heartbreaking moments of the entire story, Sutton, the humanitarian doctor, and of course there is Cole, her guard. And I can’t forget to mention Zeus, arguably my favorite character: the loyal, goofy, hilarious, brave and protective guard dog. As they spend more and more time together, Cole’s attraction to Lexi grows, and they can no longer ignore the obvious connection. To be together, they must face dangerous and impossible odds, damaged pasts, uncertain futures, and death if they are caught.

“Please tell me how I was not going to fall in love with her? Without a doubt, she’s the most amazing person I’ve ever known. So you know what? Yeah, she broke me. She weakened me. But it’s the best thing that ever happened to me… because I have her.”

The entire story is fraught with tension, romantic and otherwise; danger is around every corner. The pages fly by as the reader hurries to find out what happens next. There is an occasional hole in the plot, but not so much that it detracts from the full impact of the story. The book has the aspects of dystopian plots that I really enjoy: a tyrannical government and the underdog rebels that wish to overthrow it. Caught between are the people who must fight this battle, and regardless of the side they are on, so many lives will be destroyed. But there are those like Lexi, Cole, Bruno, and Sutton, who believe in the good and fight for their beliefs. Though it has typical dystopian themes, this is an original story, with twists, turns, questions, and shocking answers. The action-packed climax kept me riveted and shocked me with a surprise a never saw coming. The story illustrates the evil, fear and violence that humans are capable of, but also the compassion, kindness, trust, and ultimately, love.

“Most of all, I wish for peace. If I survive this, all I want is to live with Cole and to live in peace for the rest of my life, knowing I made the right choice.”

*I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
