Title: Finding Mercy (A Prepper Romance)

Author: D.L. Jackson

Publisher: Decadent Publishing

Release Date: December 22, 2012

My Rating: 5 Stars

You’ll die in three minutes without oxygen, three hours without shelter, three days without water and three weeks without food. But could you live a lifetime with a broken heart?

Mercy Evans has come to Evans Point hoping to collect herself and find a way to resurrect her career as an anchorwoman for Cheyenne’s news station. Sergeant Justin Redway has come to Evans Point to try to forget his past and survive all he’s done.

One is a battle-damaged veteran, the other a desperate woman who will go to any extreme to get his story. When their worlds collide, sparks fly and old wounds open. As the chasm between the fated lovers widens, it might be too big to cross.

One town, two lovers, and a second chance at finding mercy.

My Review:

I love this book! *Note: I have a slight obsession with “Prepping” and combine that with a sexy romance, and I’m one happy girl 🙂

Set among the backdrop of a beautiful and remote Wyoming town, this romance has so many intriguing elements: a war hero, a troubled newscaster, and a community of Doomsday preppers.

At the heart of the story is Justin and Mercy’s romance. Their undeniable chemistry leads them to a no-strings-attached relationship; though they quickly realize they mean much more to each other. Their story of sacrifice, love, and redemption is multi-layered, emotional and well-written. Each incredibly strong in their own way, Justin and Mercy must make difficult choices and sacrifices in order to be together, find peace, and become who they truly want to be.

The intriguing subplot of potential Doomsday, heart-pounding action, and Mercy and Justin’s spicy sexual attraction and ultimately sweet romance combine to make this a creative and throughly enjoyable read.

Book Review: A SONG FOR JULIA by Charles Sheehan-Miles

Title: A Song for Julia (Thompson Sisters)

Author: Charles Sheehan-Miles

Release Date: December 2, 2012

Rating: 5+ Stars

Everyone should have something to rebel against.

Crank Wilson left his South Boston home at sixteen to start a punk band and burn out his rage at the world. Six years later, he’s still at odds with his father, a Boston cop, and doesn’t ever speak to his mother. The only relationship that really matters is with his younger brother, but watching out for Sean can be a full-time job. The one thing Crank wants in life is to be left the hell alone to write his music and drive his band to success.

Julia Thompson left a secret behind in Beijing that exploded into scandal in Washington, DC, threatening her father’s career and dominating her family’s life. Now, in her senior year at Harvard, she’s haunted by a voice from her past and refuses to ever lose control of her emotions again, especially when it comes to a guy.

When Julia and Crank meet at an anti-war protest in Washington in the fall of 2002, the connection between them is so powerful it threatens to tear everything apart.

 My Review:

Brilliant, heart-wrenching, and completely captivating, A Song for Julia is a poignant tale of love, family, healing and redemption.

Julia and Crank each have their own interesting story to tell, but put them together and it is the perfect storm. Intrigue, intense emotion, and undeniable chemistry define this unlikely couple. They are both relatable, multi-dimensional characters, complete with strengths, flaws, difficult pasts, and hopeful futures. The author uses both characters to narrate the story, transitioning seamlessly from one perspective to the other: quite a task when they each possess a completely unique voice.  Theirs is not an easy relationship: it is difficult, messy, and beautiful.

Crank and Julia’s story is not the only highlight of the book. They have lives outside their relationship. These sub-plots and the secondary cast of characters make the story rich and vibrant; the author brings to life the nuances of complicated families and friendships. These relationships are an integral part of the characters, adding another element to this already compelling story.

The truth is, I have trouble finding the words to properly describe how I feel about this book. I absolutely love it. It is why I read books. I was completely overcome by the intense emotion and left tearful and breathless at the conclusion. In Crank and Julia’s story, the author reminds us that sometimes an unlikely person becomes the most important person, the one who changes everything, the reason we are able to finally become who we are meant to be.

“ ‘I don’t want to be to be one of your conquests. I don’t want to be another fucking girl getting screwed- someone your bandmates say was a horrible scene the next morning.’

‘I like it when you say ‘fucking’.’

I closed my eyes. ‘You’re impossible.’

 ‘That’s why you love me.’

‘I do not love you. I don’t even like you.’

‘You will,’ he said, his voice low and luscious. I could feel the vibration of that voice from my ears all the way down to my feet.

‘Maybe,’ I whispered. ‘But not tonight.’ “

What would happen if you were forced to marry your best friend?

Lily’s about to find out. Even though her parents are wading through a messy divorce, they insist that she marry her best friend Mason. But why?

She searches for the reason behind their insistence that she marry Mason and learns a deeply buried family secret. A century ago, her ancestors saved her Fiance’s family from execution; and in return, he is to protect her from retribution.

Lily has caught the eye of a dangerous demon and learns Mason has a dark secret. Is she strong enough to save herself?

My Review:

Relatively short in length, I felt like I held my breath the entire time I was reading this. I was immediately drawn in by the characters and their story. Chambers expertly creates an aura of mystery around the cast, especially the two leading males. Each irresistible in their way, Lily has quite a choice to make. Lily herself is a fantastic female lead. She has great strength of character in spite of all she must face, yet remains humanly flawed, vulnerable, and relatable. For me, she is definitely a new favorite heroine!

The story is well-written and incredibly engaging. The author slowly draws you in, revealing the right clues at the right time. There is action, violence, romance, emotion, and angst, as Lily struggles to find her own footing in a world she is so unfamiliar with. The final scenes in this novella held me completely captive. I only wish the book was longer…. I look forward to reading the next chapter in Lily’s story.

“‘Do you love me?’ His words were a whisper, the fire in his eyes stirred excitement in my soul. Anger at his force rose in me and the words left my mouth despite my attempt to hold them in.

‘Yes! I do.‘ I stared up at him as the violence that filled his eyes turned to desperation. I lifted up onto my elbows under his weight, my lips meeting his in a painful kiss. He grew gentle and fire raced through my blood.”

Have you ever woken up every day afraid of everything?

For single mom and widow Melody Carter, six months passed since an IED ripped her life apart. Everyone is sympathetic and offers platitudes of comfort and support. Everyone thinks they know why she’s grieving but Melody isn’t mourning her broken heart. She’s ashamed to be grateful her abusive husband won’t hurt her anymore and scared for her child. Born with a mild heart defect, her daughter needs lifesaving surgery and with her funds tight and her emotional scars tighter, she’s running out of options. When she receives an offer for assistance from Mike’s Place, can Melody put her faith in the men her husband called friend?

Have you ever woken up, day after day, to discover your body’s betrayal?

Marine Captain, Joe Anderson Cooper, received the Silver Star for Valor when he led his unit through heavy fire to rescue fellow Marines. Despite numerous injuries, the Captain refused medical aid, insisting that the medics attend others. A broken back and shattered bones put Captain Cooper in a wheelchair and every day is a battle to keep his recovery on track and his sanity intact. When a single mom moves in to the apartment next door to his and he recognizes a kindred—damaged—soul, can he overcome her fear and be the man she’s always needed?

Can these two lonely souls rise to the challenge or will their scars trap them forever?

My Review:

This story of a Marine meeting a nearly broken woman, helping her to heal and move on from her past, and ultimately finding love with her hit incredibly close to home for me.

It is beautifully written and deeply emotional, with characters that demand the reader’s devoted attention. Melody’s story is absolutely heart-breaking, but the author gives her such strength, even in her devastating vulnerability. She clings to the edge, finding hope in small places. When Joe comes in to her life, she sees someone who finally may catch her if she can’t hold on any longer. Joe is the perfect leading man, strong, supportive, handsome, and kind.

I was completely captivated by Melody and Joe’s story. It is devastating, touching, and heart-warming; two people finding light in complete darkness. I loved that that they took the necessary time to heal themselves before coming together as a couple. I cried more than a few tears for these characters and rejoiced at their eventual happy ending. I absolutely love this book 🙂

Another Story in The Edge Series

Years after Luke’s sweetheart was ripped from his arms on prom night, Meri’s loss still haunts him. Searching for her everywhere, he finds her only in his dreams and on the pages of a dark comic book he created in her image. But on the anniversary of her disappearance, she shows up on his doorstep without having aged a day. What can he do but invite her in?
Meri’s nights are all about surviving alone on the dark, seedy side of life. Once a year she treats herself to a night of tasty passion with her one true love. Is this the year to seal the deal and make their love eternal, or will she walk away to become just another fantasy?

My Review:

This is a well-written, sexy, and heart-breaking paranormal romance; a quick and easy novella, perfect for a single setting. It is the dark story of young loved halted by a single tragic event. Though they can’t have a normal life together, the couple lives only for their yearly reunion. Their coupling is enticing and filled with emotion. In just a short story, the author creates an engaging plot and intriguing characters; I only wish that I could have read more.

“She dragged her long, red nails lightly down his torso and he recoiled. Yes, while out cold she’d stripped him naked and tied him to the bed. Was that a crime? Not according to vampire law, not that she studied it. If anything were more daunting than human law, it would be vampire law. You’d have to live forever to absorb it all. The only thing she wanted to absorb was him. His heart and soul and mortality.”

Author Bio: (I don’t always include these but I thought this one was fun and different…)

Left for dead in an enchanted forest, Kelli was raised by wolves, which explains her thick coat of fur and keen night vision. As an adolescent, she was exiled from the pack due to her love of well-done steak smothered in ketchup (her penchant for blackened beef has also caused her ejection from several fine eateries). On her own, she roamed the streets, eating from dumpsters and sleeping in abandoned dog houses. Cold, starving and destitute, Kelli turned to the oldest profession—writing. Since her fall from grace, she has penned several smutty stories for which she has received many accolades. And despite her limited vocabulary, inability to punctuate properly and her well-documented spelling disability, Kelli has collected an assortment of awards (some of them for her writing). But what she wants most in the world is to return to the enchanted forest and her pack. As soon as she figures out north from south and east from west, she will do just that. Until then, happy reading.

Hello and welcome to the blog tour for Avoiding Responsibility! I’m sharing a ton of stuff with you today including: My review, a very sexy excerpt, and two exciting giveaways!

Despite the explosive chemistry between Lexi and Ramsey, she is skeptical about trusting him after everything that has happened. When things are amiss with him, she starts questioning his motives. Can Ramsey be the one to remove Jack from Lexi’s life permanently or should she move on with her blossoming new life?

My Review:

Though I haven’t yet read the first book in the series, Avoiding Commitment, I don’t think it’s necessary in order to enjoy this book. That being said, after reading Avoiding Responsibility I plan on reading the first book, just to get more of these characters.

There was enough back story to understand where everyone’s relationships stand, and the first meeting between Jack and Lexi let me know how strong the chemistry between them is. This is just one of the moments that the author creates so brilliantly. What I enjoyed most about the book is these “moments”. Linde has a knack for creating scenes, especially between two people, that whether they are romantic, angry, or even angst ridden, they are incredibly powerful. Emotions are raw and palpable and the reader is there, captured by the moment, and can feel the heat between the characters. At more than one point I found myself gasping out loud, my pulse-pounding, having forgotten where I was.

There is so much to enjoy in this book: brilliant “moments”, fantastic drama, romance, angst, hot male leads, twists, turns, and surprises. I look forward to reading both the first and third books in the series.

*I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

He breathed hot against her, causing her to squirm. “You taste so good.”

“Then don’t stop,” she told him, willing him to continue to touch her. Her body was achingly close.

“Not yet,” he repeated, dropping her leg and righting himself.

She was breathing heavy when he straightened and kissed her breathlessly. “See. Don’t you taste good?”

“God, I need you…now,” she said, as her hand came up and undid the button and zipper of his shorts. Only his tight ass held the shorts up, and she slid her hands to grasp the firm muscles, allowing the shorts to slide effortlessly to the floor.

He pushed her back against the railing, hard. Without the restriction of his shorts, he was clearly visible to her, throbbing, and ready. She groaned at the sight of him, picking up her own leg, wrapping it around him, and wrenching him closer to her. He slid against the length of her cotton underwear slowly, teasingly. Her climax, which had been so close only seconds earlier, was building again with every passing moment of anticipation. “You’re mine?” she murmured to him, half a question and half a statement.

His hands dug into her back as he tried to get closer and closer to her. “Yes.”

“All mine?” she groaned, her hand sinking into his hair and forcing his eyes to meet hers again.

Book Tour: ATONEMENT by Elle Chardou- Review

January 8, 2013 Book Review, Book Tour, Romance 0

Welcome to the Tour for Atonement by Elle Chardou!

Deirdre Bardot is a PhD student at Harvard and on her way home for Thanksgiving when she finds out her father has been murdered in a vicious hit and run by a drunk driver.

Forced to piece her life together after such a traumatic event, Deirdre moves back to Seattle to be closer to her younger sister, Caitlyn, and their mother.
When her psychiatrist, Dr. van der Meer, suggests she needs to get away from it all and take a vacation, her best friend decides to introduce her to a friend of his who has more or less the same idea. Colin is perfect: he’s good looking, self-deprecating and sexy as hell but he also happens to be Dr. van der Meer’s son.
Deirdre finds herself falling hard for a guy she barely knows and one who is equally into her as she is into him. They decide a trip to Western Europe together is the perfect way to get to know one another a whole lot better.
Then an unspeakable and random act of violence occurs and Colin realizes he is forced to reveal a secret to Deirdre he has been hiding…a secret that is breaking him, and in doing so to free his conscience, he just might destroy the relationship he has created with Deirdre and lose her forever.

My Review:

Dramatic, emotional, and sexy, Atonement is an intriguing romance.

Two people are trapped in the odd rut that can occur between college and the real world. Circumstances have prevented them from moving forward with their lives, and finding a potential life partner finally spurs them to evaluate their lives, and what they really want.

Though I didn’t find any of the main characters particularly relatable (that doesn’t mean that other readers won’t), I still very much enjoyed Colin and Deirdre’s romance and the way it develops. The author builds plenty of sexual tension but handles the couple’s interactions carefully, allowing them to establish an intense emotional connection; a connection that is necessary for the difficulties their relationship must endure.

This plot flows easily, with twists and turns and dramatic moments. It is a story of honesty, forgiveness, and healing, ending in a dramatic moment that has me eager to read more about these characters.

*I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Another story in The Edge Series

Unconvinced of her fiancé’s demise, Molly combs the galaxy to search for him. As her supplies run low, she is forced to turn around and set a course for Earth, alone. But, a Moloxian Starcruiser halts her retreat, and the single passenger transports onto her ship without permission. Taser in hand to defend herself, she is startled as the form remolds into her fiancé. Has Diego found her or is her tired mind playing tricks?

A great short novella, the author has succeeded in fitting a big story in to a small package. The plot has twists, turns, and a few gasp-inducing moments. This is a  story of a love so deep that it can not be defined by time or galaxies. With its intriguing plot, super hot sex, and otherworldly romance, this book is a perfect and satisfying quickie.

Was cupid blind?

Anne Sommer, a spinster firmly on the shelf, does the unthinkable. She hires a man to give her pleasure for one night. Anne wants the erotic memories to keep her company in the lonely years ahead. She did not expect the young man who showed up at her door to move her in ways she never imagined.

Desmond Glover gives pleasure—for a price. An orphan whose childhood was mired in scandal and poverty, Desmond has learned to close off his emotions with regard to his occupation. He did not count on a lonely spinster to awaken his hidden passion.

Not only do the years separate them, but their social standings. Can Anne and Desmond cross such a chasm and find mutual desire—or love?

This is a well written, erotic and sensual historical romance, set in Victorian era England. It has an engaging storyline, and interesting characters.

Desmond and Anne have such different backgrounds and life-stories, but ultimately they ache for the same thing: a partner in love and in lust.

With steamy sex, a beautiful and damaged male lead, and a bit of romance, this is a thoroughly enjoyable short story. It is edgy and a bit dark, punctuated with sexual heat. It’s perfect for a single sitting, maybe waiting for an appointment; try not to squirm 😉

Hardworking Mia Lavender’s been offered a promotion she can’t refuse–VP of Client Experience at New York’s exclusive BDSM club, The Satin Rose Experience, or SRE. Mia’s kept her submissive tendencies a secret, until now. She’ll have ample opportunity to explore her fantasy because to succeed in her new role at SRE, she will need on-the-job training at the hands of Asher Cane.

During Asher Cane’s very first training session with Mia, he fails to follow his own rules and has the hottest vanilla sex of his life. Mia needs training, and Asher is damned if he’ll allow another Dom to touch her. Can Asher be the dispassionate trainer Mia needs to learn the exquisite give and take of dominance and submission? Or will Mia’s submission come only at the cost of his heart?

A quick and sexy read, perfect for one sitting, this is a skillful portrayal of a couple as they test the waters of a new relationship. Bunino captures perfectly feelings present in the start of any relationship: the mixture of mystery and lust that makes that time so exciting. A well-matched couple, Asher and Mia challenge each other and bring undeniable heat to the pages. The story flows easily, and the sex is steamy, sensual, and electric.

With the perfect backdrop of the hotel, and the promise of new and interesting characters to come, I am very eager to read more in the Satin Rose Experience series.

A failed relationship and long hours at her flourishing practice have Dr. Brooke Allaire running on empty. Ty Venice is a team player. He’s used to sharing submissives with fellow Dom Jackson Reid. However, if there was ever a game changer, Dr. Brooke Allaire was it. That is, until he gets a glimpse at her ultimate fantasy, to be possessed by two men at once.

A lovely addition to the Satin Rose Experience series, this incredibly sexy story has the added bonus of a happily ever after. Brooke’s first time experience with kink is one most women will envy: the true fulfillment of a fantasy.
Bunino writes a fantastic pair of leading men. Ty and Jackson are the perfect specimens for a ménage-a-trois. They are two completely different men, each with their own style and brand of sexiness. With the added bonus of Ty’s blossoming feelings for Brooke, this story is both sweet and hot.
