Title: A Dom’s Dilemma

 Author: Kathryn R. Blake

Publisher: Blushing Books

Release Date: October 2012

Rating: 4 Stars

Kinky happenings in rural New England.

James Evans has been a police detective for sixteen years and an active participant in the local BDSM scene for even longer. So, at age 35, he knows what he likes, and for the last three years, he’s liked what he’s seen in Kelly Franklin. Pretty, feisty and submissive, the fact that she scurries off like a frightened rabbit every time she sees him, only intrigues him more. He would have pressed a lot harder to corner her, if she didn’t already belong to someone else. That is why, when Kyle Sinclair mentions he’s looking for a new Dom to top Kelly, Jim doesn’t hesitate to sign up for the job.

Taking his cues from Kelly, Jim quickly discovers she isn’t seeking pain and punishment the way Kyle thought. In fact, all of Kelly’s signals indicate she is scared of pain, which both puzzles Jim and brings his protective side to the fore. Why would a girl want to be a submissive at a BDSM club if she fears how a Dom might punish her?

As a Dom, Jim is pleased by Kelly’s open responsiveness, but as a police detective, he is determined to solve the enigma she presents. Their relationship grows even more complicated when he discovers Kelly has not only been keeping secrets from him, she has lied, and neither side of him tolerates any type of deception–ever. A point he is more than willing to make with Kelly draped butt-naked over his knee for a spanking until she finally tells him the truth.

Exploring several aspects of BDSM and the D/S relationship, this story is thoughtfully written and provides interesting insight into the relationship between a Dom and his sub. There is little sex, but the book explores a few different BDSM scenarios, highlighting some elements of BDSM safety and protocol. The author even addresses abuse in BDSM and it becomes the focal point in a heart-pounding plot twist that ultimately decides the fate of Jim and Kelly’s relationship.

Jim and Kelly are two strong lead characters that create plenty of heat in this gut-wrenching emotional roller coaster. In addition to exploring the conflicted mindset of a Dom facing difficulties dealing with a bratty and recalcitrant sub, the characters are challenged by issues faced in any relationship: compatibility, past relationships and most importantly, trust and honesty.

Book Review: OVERNIGHT SENSATION by Desiree Holt

Title: Overnight Sensation

Author: Desiree Holt

Publisher: Decadent Publishing

Rating: 4 Stars

At the end of a long, hard week, Abbie Lawlor’s feet hurt, her head ached and she just wanted one cosmos with her best friend, then home to soak in the tub. She sure wasn’t looking to hook up with anyone. Her luck with men was worse than bad. Too bad with visitors flooding San Antonio, the bar at The Menger Hotel was so jammed a sheet of paper would barely fit between two people. So when Sam Burdette ended up pressed against her, she felt every detail of his big, hard body.

The heat that flared between them could have set fire to everyone in the bar. But it was the invisible link that occurs between Dom and sub that made Abbie forget all about her aches and pains. Letting the very sexy Texas Ranger coax her out of the bar and up to his room for some very off the wall sex could turn a casual “Hello” into an overnight sensation.

A sweet and super hot BDSM erotic romance. This story has a great combination of a willing but inexperienced sub and her potential dream man, a sexy Texas Ranger that happens to be a Dom. Their chemistry is immediate and the pages sizzle with it. I appreciated that the author told the story from both characters’ perspective, and that it was executed seamlessly. This is a hot, steamy, and satisfying novella, with the added bonus of a HEA 🙂

“Abbie didn’t usually act impetuously so why had she followed the man out of the bar without any reservation? She’d about given up her quest to find what she was looking for in a man—solid, sexy. A man who wanted the same type of things in the bedroom she did. A man who could claim both her body and her heart. Yet it had seemed the most natural thing to be led out of the noise and confusion of the bar by a man whose name she didn’t even know. Despite his relaxed attitude, she could feel—almost see—the power radiating from him. He was a man in control, the very element that drew her to him so strongly. Because Abbie Lawlor carried a secret—as a latent submissive, she wanted a monogamous relationship with the right kind of Dom.”

Book Review: HIS NEED, HER DESIRE by Malia Mallory

November 19, 2012 BDSM, Book Review, Erotica, Novella/Short Story, Romance 1

Title: His Need, Her Desire (Dominating BDSM Billionaires Erotic Romance #1)

 Author: Malia Mallory

 Publication Date: Oct 15, 2012

Rating: 4 Stars

Tabitha Quinn didn’t come to Hawaii to be spanked. But when vacationing businessman Marcus Granger saves her from drowning, they begin an affair that moves from the beach to the bedroom and straight into an experience Tabitha’s never had before: dark-haired, blue-eyed Marcus is a dominant, and spanking is just the beginning. The sex is intense, the emotion even more so, until they both must decide if this is a holiday fling or the real thing.

The temperature isn’t the only thing that’s hot in Hawaii.

Mallory has written a steamy erotic romance that fulfills many a woman’s fantasy. A single girl’s tropical vacation and a chance meeting with a handsome, wealthy man. As if that isn’t enough, there’s undeniable chemistry and fantastic kinky sex.

I enjoyed accompanying Tabitha on her dream vacay. Even before she meets Marcus, she has some pretty sexy scenes all on her own! Marcus is a perfect leading man. Handsome and a strong but caring Dom: a fantasy personified.

The story is well written, the characters engaging, and the sex scenes sizzling. This book is a great, quick read with kink that’s not too kinky and a sweet and romantic HEA. I only wish I knew what happened to Tabitha and Marcus after the story ends…

“He untied each wrist in turn and took her into his arms.

Tabitha strained to be closer, rubbing herself agaist him. She thought she had some idea of what she was getting into but realized it was not something easily described with words. Her mind had been engaged on a deeper level. Giving over control had breached a psychological barrier she’d never realized was there. Tabitha always believed the mind was the most erogenous zone, but now she truly enjoyed the extent of it.”

Join us in Verona, where families and bodies collide…

The Tragic Foreplay of Romeo and Juliet is approximately 38,000 words and more than 100 paper pages long. M.A. DeWitt is the pen name of an author who has written 30 books in various genres.

I love this book! I was excited when approached about reading a Shakespeare adaptation. The story is cleverly written and very hot! The tongue-in-cheek humor combined with the pop culture references weaved into the classic tale had me smiling all the way through. All of the familiar characters are there, and many with some fantastic kinky twists. I suppose that if you are a Shakespeare purist then you may not enjoy this book. But think of The Taming of the Shrew, raunchy and hilarious. I can’t help but think that if Shakespeare was still around, he would get a kick out of this sexy and witty adaptation.

” “Oh, Romeo, Romeo, why the hell do you have to be Romeo? And are you gay?”

“No,” a voice whispered from below.

Juliet nearly shrieked but covered her mouth as soon as she realized who it was. She looked down and surely enough, the man of her dreams come to life was standing down there denying rumors of his homosexuality.

“I think my ex-girlfriend started spreading that one around. Also, someone once saw me with all those plastic vibrators and got the wrong idea.”

Juliet laughed. She gripped the edge of the balcony and wished not only that Romeo was inside of her room, but that he was inside of her as well.”

The time has come for Brady Jacobs to grab hold of the woman he loves and their future. But his lady, Isabella Knowles, is skittish. He knows she’ll bolt at the mention of twenty, forty or sixty more years together.

He needs to handle this with precise planning, tools to seduce and never give her a moment to flee.

Brady will tie her down, pleasure her, push her further than she’s ever experienced.

Then he’ll ask her …

This is a great little novella. It’s sweet, but not too sweet, and definitely hot. The sex scenes are well written and super-sexy. The story has so many elements that I love. A strong female lead, a hot male lead, kinky sex, a little bit of humor, and even some tear-inducing romance complete the package. That’s quite a bit packed into this novella that is worth reading!

“If all went well—if she said yes—it would be one helluva story to look back on.

He came to a stop in the doorway of his bedroom.

There slept the love of his life, her wavy red tresses spread out across his pillow, the sheets tangled around her sleek and gorgeous legs. Christ, even sleeping, she stole his breath.

As he moved into the bedroom and to the foot of the bed, he made a mental note to take her Glock from the bedside table.

He wanted to live to tell their grandchildren about how he proposed marriage. Knowing her as he did…she’d shoot first then ask questions.”

NEW RELEASE Book Review: BEYOND SHAME (Beyond #1) by Kit Rocha

October 1, 2012 BDSM, Book Review, Erotica, New Release, Romance 0

Title: Beyond Shame (Beyond #1)

Author: Kit Rocha

Publication Date: October 2, 2012

Rating: 4.5 Stars

“All Noelle Cunningham has ever wanted is a life beyond–beyond the walls of Eden, where only the righteous are allowed to remain, and beyond her stiflingly restrictive existence as a councilman’s daughter. But only ruins lie outside the City, remnants of a society destroyed by solar storms decades earlier.

The sectors surrounding Eden house the corrupt, the criminal–men like Jasper McCray, bootlegger and cage fighter. Jas clawed his way up from nothing to stand at the right hand of Sector Four’s ruthless leader, and he’ll defend the O’Kane gang with his life. But no fight ever prepared him for the exiled City girl who falls at his feet.

Her innocence is undeniable, but so is their intense sexual attraction, and soon they’re crossing every boundary Noelle barely knew she had. But if she wants to belong to Jas, first she’ll have to open herself to the gang, to a dangerous world of sex, lust and violence. A world where passion is power, and freedom is found in submission.”

Beyond Shame is a gritty and intense dystopian erotic romance. Reading it is pure pleasure and just enough pain.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I’m really enjoying dystopian stories right now and Beyond Shame didn’t disappoint. I found myself wanting to keep turning the pages. The plot itself is engaging, the characters are interesting, and the sex is SUPER HOT. I am also impressed at the author’s ability to add just enough humor to provide balance to a story that is dark and edgy.

At the heart of the story is Noelle’s journey of self-discovery. Growing up in a wealthy family inside the City, she always knew that she was different, and that she would never be happy there. However, she was vastly unprepared for life in the sectors outside the City. Fortunately, Jasper finds her, rescues her, and ultimately falls for her. Jasper plays an integral role in helping Noelle find out who she is and what she really wants out of life, all the while hoping that it is him.

I enjoyed Noelle’s journey. The author is insightful and honest about the characters’ feelings, not just Noelle’s. She presents the reader with three-dimesional characters that are trying to reconcile complicated pasts with possibly more complicated futures. Jasper is easy to love. He is intense, brooding, and oh so sexy. I always fall for the damaged tough-guy with a heart.  Lex is another interesting character. She’s so strong and yet vulnerable in her own way. I thought her hard exterior provided a great contrast to Noelle’s softness.

Okay, let’s get to the sex. This book has some fantastic sex scenes. They are well written, very steamy, and there are a lot of them. I find that sometimes in stories that have numerous sex scenes that it can become a bit repetitive. NOT SO with Beyond Shame. There were definitely a few times I found myself a little breathless.

I gave this book 4.5 stars and highly recommend it.

*I received this book as an ARC from the publisher(via Netgalley) in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Guest Post: Author Sophie Morgan on her book, DIARY OF A SUBMISSIVE

September 24, 2012 BDSM, Erotica, Guest Post 0

I am SO EXCITED to have Sophie Morgan as guest today! She’s here to tell us about why she wrote DIARY OF A SUBMISSIVE as well as what she would like readers to take away from the book. Enjoy!

Click HERE to win a copy of DIARY OF A SUBMISSIVE

I have to say, my life is a little surreal at the moment. I’ve written a book called The Diary of a Submissive, pitched very much as a real-life Fifty Shades of Grey, which means I’ve spent a great amount of time over the last six months discussing rude things in business-like fashion. From discussions with my fab and long-suffering editor (who is very posh and very English to the extent Hugh Grant could play him in any biopic) about the pacing of sex scenes to chatting about which paddles should go into the gift bags at the book launch (one of the most brilliant yet surreal experiences of my life), I’ve basically been laughing to myself the whole way through about how bonkers it is.

Similarly during the interviews I’ve done to promote it. Admittedly, as I’m a journalist by trade myself I’m more used to asking questions than answering them which puts me on the back foot anyway, but I defy anyone to not feel a bit nonplussed when asked what their safe word is by someone they’ve only just met (for the record, it’s Flugelhorn, and if you get why then you and I have similar pop cultural references).

So yes, it’s all been a bit strange, made more so because the book, at least in its earliest incarnations, came about utterly by accident. Not in an ‘I started writing an email one day and suddenly, oops it was there’ sort of way (I wish). But initially it was very much about writing about my own experiences as I had them. I’m very into BDSM, particularly the dominance and submission elements. Early on when I was first getting into it, I found myself thinking a lot about what I’d done in the day or two after each new experience, usually in that dead time when your mind wanders while waiting for the coffee machine at work to do its thing. In a lot of ways my earliest writing (on a now long-defunct blog) was about trying to explain to myself exactly what I got out of submission and why and how it was hot even while a voice in the back of my head was going ‘why are you letting him do THAT?!’. From my first spanking, through to ever more intense scenes, I detailed lots of them – trying to explain what I got out of it, why it was hot, what made me enjoy what we were doing on one level even while at points I could quite happily of smothered my dominant with a pillow. How my mind took a while to catch up with what my body was incontrovertibly telling me was hot.

It wasn’t something I was promoting to get readers, although over time I did get a few regulars, but more about having a space where I could (if it doesn’t sound too lame) work these things through in my head, untangling the feelings and confusion of being generally a feminist fan of equality and on another finding it incredibly erotic to surrender that equality sexually for a little while. People liked it though, some people found it hot, others debated it with me, and in time I began to realise that, you know, I was doing what loads of other people were doing and there was no harm to it at all.

Eventually I ended up with a chronology of a lot of my early kink adventures. They needed filling out, contextualising within a wider explanation of my life and adding to with the things that I hadn’t got around to writing about – mostly because they happened within a shorter space of time and during a time I was too caught up living my life to sit down and write about it. It took a while, but I got there in the end. My main problem is I am an incredible procrastinator. It’s the journalist in me – I find it very difficult to stop faffing and knuckle down until the deadline is looming, which is fine if you’ve got a 1,000 word feature to finish in a few hours, but less good when the book is 90,000 words. So I sat down with no TV or distractions, no internet, and I wrote fifty minutes of every hour, stopping at ten to (or around then – if I was on a roll I kept it going), to make a mug of tea and wander about my flat a bit. It was a bit solitary for a few weeks, but totally worth it, not least for my boyfriend who took the time to watch days and days of cricket without me interrupting or complaining. He kept me furnished with tea and chocolate biscuits though.

I didn’t write The Diary of a Submissive as a response to Fifty Shades of Grey (not least because most of the book pre-dates it), although in light of the popularity of the trilogy I’m even happier it’s out there as another viewpoint of BDSM for people to read and make their minds up about. I figure if you like Fifty Shades you’ll find the subject matter interesting but it was important to me that this wasn’t just jumping on a bandwagon – if anything I see myself running alongside the bandwagon waving my arms and shouting ‘it’s fab you all know about safe words and jiggle balls but you know that dominant/submissive relationships don’t have to be like that, and you can have them and still work and go for Mexican food with your friends and watch Modern Family and stuff, right?’  If that’s the main thing people take away from reading my book that will make me incredibly happy.

* Sophie Morgan is a journalist and author. Her book The Diary of a Submissive is published by Gotham Books. It has been described as ‘the real life Fifty Shades of Grey’, although Sophie would like to point out she doesn’t bite her lip and would get Silence of the Lambs flashbacks if a strange man offered to show her his red room of pain. Book Review: EDEN by Janelle Stalder

September 20, 2012 Book Review, Young Adult 0

Title: Eden

Author: Janelle Stalder

Publisher: iUniverse

Publication Date: September 20, 2011

Rating: 4 Stars

Trapped within the cruel world of hormones and bullies, fifteen-year-old Aiden is convinced life has more to offer him. His instincts are proven correct on the night he is awakened by a voice calling to him from outside his window. As he sleepily peers into his yard, his eyes slowly focus on a woman who says she is there to take him to Eden. Aiden is about to fulfill the life purpose he never knew he had.

It is in Eden, a land on the brink of war, where Aiden will finally learn to trust himself and those around him. Accompanied by Wolf, his sidekick Logan, and the beautiful archer, Elisa, Aiden is soon thrust into a battle to save Eden. Meanwhile Elisa, the only girl in the King’s Army, is in the midst of her own struggles. Betrothed to a man she has no intention of marrying, Elisa is caught between the need to prove herself and her desire for true happiness. And now that she has met Aiden, she is more confused than ever.

In this action-packed fantasy tale, romance, adventure, and intrigue surround Aiden as he learns just what he is capable of when he discovers confidence and courage.

Eden is a fast-moving fantasy tale set in a distant world that exists parallel to our own. Stalder succeeds in weaving together multiple story-lines into an exciting and engaging page turner.

I love an underdog story, and Eden is just that. In our world, Aiden is a normal, unpopular, fifteen year-old boy. When he finds himself in Eden, he must come to terms with how special he truly is, and ultimately be responsible for leading an entire army of men into battle. I enjoyed the way that Stalder handled Aiden’s transformation. She allowed him to grow in skill and confidence as a soldier, but never took him too far from who is really is.

Aiden’s story is the only one that grabbed my interest. Stadler provides multiple plot lines, each with their own appeal. Each character has his or her own story to tell. I was particularly taken by the story of Callum and Rose. Callum is the brother to Jameson, the current High King of Eden. Callum has joined forces with Brutus the Red, and they hope to take control of all of Eden. When Callum’s army destroys Rose’s village, he kidnaps her and keeps her with him as the army travels. They have a great romantic tension, and I hope the second book gives us more of their story.

I appreciated very much that Stadler didn’t make the story a simple good vs. evil with only one side to root for. She succeeds in giving the “evil” side their own story, and at some points I found myself sympathizing with Callum and Brutus the Red. She made them human and even likable. She made it clear that on both sides of any war, there are people fighting for what they believe in.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Eden. It is an epic and engaging fantasy, with a great cast of characters. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

Looking around at the high walls of the city, and thinking about the beauty inside them, and all the people, he knew that even though it wasn’t his home, he couldn’t let it be destroyed. The city, the forest, the land itself had a magical feel, a feeling of peace. There was no way he could stand by and let it be ruined.”

Book Review: MILE BELOW PEEP SHOW by Nishi Serrano

Title: Mile Below Peep Show

Author: Nishi Serrano

Publisher: Decadent Publishing

Rating: 4.5 Stars

“Lady Rose fears her best friend Abigail Bertram is growing lonely and embittered by her life as heir and sole proprietor to her family’s business. After experiencing the pleasures and induction to the Mile High Airship Club, Rose and her husband devise a plan to cure their friend of her prim ways and introduce her to a new, freer world of carnal desires.

Taking Abby on their special vacation, the three friends embark on a steampunk carnival soiree under the sea brimming with mermen, a cast of lusty characters, and of course—exotic peep shows!

Will their adventure open Abby’s eyes to what she’s been missing, or will her heart stay chained to business as usual? However, a surprise none of them intended arrives to test Abby’s brass, and possibly melt her heart.”

I truly enjoyed reading this novella! Prior to Mile Below Peep Show I was a Steampunk virgin, and I’m so glad that I took the plunge. I will definitely read more in the future. (If you’re not familiar with Steampunk check out the wiki here.)
Serrano has created a fascinating and sexy underwater resort,  where visiting club members can make all of their fantasies come true. The novella is a delight to read. Somehow it manages to feel historical and futuristic all at the same time. The descriptions are wonderfully vivid and the characters engaging. There is lovely romance and steamy sex. I was completely taken in by the world that Serrano created, and look forward to reading more of her work!

Book Review: CAPTIVE IN THE DARK by CJ Roberts

August 26, 2012 BDSM, Book Review, Erotica 0

Title: Captive in the Dark (The Dark Duet #1)

Author: CJ Roberts

Published Date: July 20, 2011

Rating: 4 Stars

“Caleb is a man with a singular interest in revenge. Kidnapped as a young boy and sold into slavery by a power-hungry mobster, he has thought of nothing but vengeance. For twelve years he has immersed himself in the world of pleasure slaves searching for the one man he holds ultimately responsible. Finally, the architect of his suffering has emerged with a new identity, but not a new nature. If Caleb is to get close enough to strike, he must become the very thing he abhors and kidnap a beautiful girl to train her to be all that he once was.

Eighteen-year-old Olivia Ruiz has just woken up in a strange place. Blindfolded and bound, there is only a calm male voice to welcome her. His name is Caleb, though he demands to be called Master. Olivia is young, beautiful, naïve and willful to a fault. She has a dark sensuality that cannot be hidden or denied, though she tries to accomplish both. Although she is frightened by the strong, sadistic, and arrogant man who holds her prisoner, what keeps Olivia awake in the dark is her unwelcome attraction to him.

WARNING: This book contains very disturbing situations, dubious consent, strong language, and graphic violence.”

Captive in the Dark is the dark, frightening tale of a young woman, kidnapped and held against her will. She is being trained as a pleasure slave to be sold to the highest bidder. As a slave, she is to be an integral part in the final stages in a years long plot for revenge.

I found this book very intriguing. Violence, terror, and human trafficking provide a backdrop for a story about two people whose lives are to be forever changed from the moment they meet. The revenge plot is in itself an interesting story but Caleb and Livvie provide a human and relatable perspective on their situation. Neither have chosen to be where they are. Circumstances beyond their control have made them who they are and made them pawns in a deadly game.

I’m not sure how I feel about Caleb and Livvie. They have an obvious connection that neither can completely deny. But, their situation seems too impossible. I’m afraid that Caleb is too damaged and his need for revenge too great. I want so much more for Livvie. Even if she does want Caleb I can’t help feeling she deserves better. However, I can see that they offer each other a chance for healing and redemption.

At it’s heart, Captive in the Dark is a story of survival. It portrays two people that have managed to survive unimaginable horrors and still maintain their humanity and a will to escape their circumstances. They are both fighters. They still have a capacity for feeling and emotion, perhaps even love. The book is very readable and the story compelling. Roberts succeeded in creating a tiny glimmer of hope in a very unlikely place. I am anxiously awaiting Seduced in the Dark, the second half of this story.

“Like a falcon, she needed the dark to understand who her master was. She would learn to trust him, to rely upon him, to anticipate what he wanted from her. And like any master worth his salt, he would reward her for her obedience. He would be exceedingly firm, but he would also be as fair as he could be. He had not chosen the instrument of his revenge at random. He had chosen a beautiful submissive. And what was a submissive if not adaptable- if not a survivor?”
