Laney Landry has been fighting Deads alongside her brother and friends for three years. But she has a secret. She’s immune to Dead bites and has to find the right people to trust with the information. Her team rallies around her to find a doctor who can extract a vaccine from Laney which could fight the virus that ended the world.

Sean Daniels leads a colony that provides her team with much needed shelter and supplies. He is obviously interested in Laney. The question is whether he’s only intrigued by her as a source for the possible vaccine, or for something more. Tests for the cure might push her body beyond what it can endure, and just as she faces a ghost from her past, her longtime teammate Derek Mitchell hints at an interest in more than just her Dead slaying abilities.

Two honorable and alluring men – one colossal decision to make. Despite historically bad taste in men, can she rise above the chaos of the apocalypse and choose the one who deserves her heart? The right choice could mean the difference between surviving…and living.

My Review

My Rating: 5 Stars

“The world hadn’t come to an end, just an end as man knew it. But there had to be a balance for the chaos. There had to be an asylum from the damned.”

I won’t go as far as to say that I hope the world as we know it ends in a horrifying zombie apocalypse, but if it does, I want to be with Shanley’s characters in her vision of the world post-virus. The author has crafted a story that is as intense in its action as it is in its emotion, sexual tension, and romance; difficult to achieve while maintaining a feeling of authenticity, but Shanley does it perfectly.

There’s plenty of action: our main characters are fighters, so we get some fantastic fight scenes, of course there is violence and death, but nothing overly gory. Laney is a kick-ass female lead, a capable fighter but also a completely relatable female. She might be totally adept at zombie slaying but she also shows vulnerability, insecurity, and a need for love and acceptance that many women share. She’s strong, brave, sarcastic, funny, sometimes socially awkward, and endearingly emotional behind closed doors. Her team is made up of equally brave and endearing men who just happen to be super sexy. Perfectly complementing the backdrop of zombie fighting and post-apocalyptic survival are engaging romantic dramas that could exist in any well-penned romance, complete with sexual tension that eventually boils over, and genuine emotion that brings tears. Shanley made me believe that even at the end of the world, sex and love will still exist.

” ‘Are you sure about this?’ he asked, looking deeply into her eyes as if they would provide the answer. For one of the first times in her life, she wasn’t afraid. She didn’t have to put on a brave face for anyone. He could’ve seen right through her if she had. ‘I need this. I need you.’ A slow smile pulled at his lips. It wa happy, and calm, and adoring. ‘Okay,’ he whispered.”

And if zombie fighting and emotional romantic dramas are not enough for you, there are also the themes of friendship, love, and loss; of living each day as if it’s your last and finding humor and comfort in simple things. A very human story of perseverance: a shattered civilization that bravely rebuilds and fights to create normalcy in a nearly impossible situation, and the girl who could be the key to saving them all. I adored this book and will absolutely read more from this author.

“Someday, when the end of her life came, she would need a happy thought. Something that would make all of the hurt and sacrifice of her nomadic life worth it. Someday she would draw on this moment to bring her peace where none existed around her physical form.”

My Review

My Rating: 4 Stars

“He dropped my right arm. I raised the pistol a pressed the barrel under his chin. His eyes widened. I hesitated, a part of me horrified at what I was doing. I was killing a man I had slept with. A man who had been tender and loving. A man who had briefly made me feel less alone. A man who planned to wipe my mind and enslave me. I pulled the trigger.”

A great reads for fans of action-packed mystery and suspense. Broken Dolls has the added bonus of a fantasy/paranormal twist and a sexy-as-hell, kick-ass female heroine.

RB (Rhiannon) Kendrick, is a telepath, and a powerful one at that. When a clan leader asks her to try and mind a missing telepath, she’s discovers a dangerous human trafficking ring, and as the story goes on, she finds out that this ring reaches far and wide. Government officials, powerful bankers, and powerful telepaths are all involved, and the human trafficking is just another layer of shaky and often violent clan politics. The plot line is quite in depth; though the plot moves quickly, with tons of action, there are a lot of key players. There’s a ton of information to absorb: Gifts, clans, people and places are thrown at the reader in quick succession. The author does a very good job in filling in information and background as necessary (there’s also important info provided in a forward and appendix) and keeping the story moving. Intense action sequences and moments of pure tension and suspense kept me on the edge of my seat for much of the book.

Our heroine, Rhiannon, is a fantastic female lead. She’s smart, sexy, and powerful, at times feeling like a superhero, and other times human and vulnerable. She usually works alone, and struggled with the amount of other people required to help her in this operation, but I loved her genuine interactions with them and the depth that the secondary characters brought to the story.

This book is paranormal mystery/suspense, with no romance and most sex was “off camera”. But, the story has a sexy edge: many of are main cast are extremely beautiful telepaths who aren’t afraid of their beauty or the effect they have on men. And these women will stop at nothing to end the men who might exploit these gifts in others of their kind. Much of the content is dark: they are dealing with sex-trafficking, and there are violent conflicts between good and evil, but there is humor added to balance it out. Overall, a great read for both fans of paranormal/fantasy and mystery/suspense.

Excerpt

I walked into the restaurant to meet my prospective client, scanned the diners and slipped into the booth with her. She started to say something, then her eyes widened and nothing came out of her open mouth.

“Mrs. Sanders? I’m RB Kendrick,” I said, extending my hand.

“Oh, my,” she breathed. “The description you gave me is wholly inadequate.” She stared at me for a minute, then said, “Copper.”

Confused, I looked around. There weren’t any police in there. “Huh?” I said intelligently.

“Your hair. It’s not ginger, it’s like polished copper. It shines.”

Women notice different things than men. As I suspected from our conversation on the phone, Sylvia Sanders was a norm and so was her husband. What I read in her mind matched what she told me verbally. It’s so much easier when clients tell you the truth. I understood why she had suspicions about her husband. The changes in his behavior and schedule screamed other woman to me also.

“So what do you want, Mrs. Sanders? A report, photos, a confrontation? A basic report of what and who he is or is not doing will run a thousand pounds. Photos catching them in the act are another thousand, if I can get them. Unlike the telly, most people don’t conveniently provide evidence in front of windows with the shades open. If you want to confront him in the act, I’ll accompany you for an additional fifteen hundred pounds.”

She blanched at my rates.

“If what he’s doing isn’t obvious, and I have to put him under surveillance for an extended period, my rates are five thousand a week.”

“I don’t think that will be necessary,” she said with a quiver in her voice. She gave me a thousand and I wrote down all the pertinent information.

“I’ll check on it this afternoon. I’m going to be out of town for a few days,” I told her. “If I don’t find anything by tomorrow morning, I’ll call you when I get back.”

“Thank you, Miss Kendrick. This has been going on for several months. I don’t think it’s going to change.”

“Mrs. Sanders, you need to think about what you’re going to do if your suspicions are correct. Are you going to confront him and hope he ends it? Or do you plan to divorce him? It’s something you should decide before hand.”

“I want a divorce,” she said. “I know he’s cheating on me. He called a little while ago and told me he had to work late this evening.”

~~~
Edward Sanders worked about a mile away. I took the Tube to his building. About twenty minutes after I arrived, I saw him come out and head for the Tube station. Obviously, he wasn’t working late.
I followed him and sat behind him on the train. I read his mind to get his destination, then sat back and used my phone to check my email.
When we left the tube station, I took a slightly different route than Sanders to reach the house of his mistress. I stood across the street and watched as she answered the door for him. I could understand why he was attracted to her. She was even more beautiful than what I had expected from the images in his mind.
I read her mind, also. She was the lonely trophy wife of a successful businessman who traveled often. Edward Sanders was good looking, and twenty years younger than his mistress’s husband. She wasn’t in love with him, but considered him a wonderful diversion. He wasn’t in love with her, either, but was infatuated that such a rich and beautiful young woman wanted him.
The shades in the living room weren’t drawn, and the amorous couple started their activities immediately upon his entering the house. I pulled my camera from my bag and walked across the street and across her lawn. There was a small tree in an ugly plastic pot sitting in the middle of the lawn, and I had to detour around it.
I could see glimpses of the lovers through the living room window, but reflections in the glass prevented me from a good view. It appeared he was doing her on the dining room table. This was going to be the easiest thousand pounds I’d ever made.
I was so focused on what was going on inside that I didn’t see the hole hidden by the small tree sitting in front of it. I should have realized what a potted tree was doing on the lawn. Someone planned to plant it.
I took a step and my left foot found only air. The world spun around and the camera slipped out of my grasp. My chin hit something hard and I bit my tongue.
When I came to my senses, my right leg was sticking straight up and the rest of me lay twisted in the bottom of a hole. My chin felt like it was on fire, and my tongue hurt like mad. It took me some time to get myself situated and crawl out onto the grass. I looked back. The hole was about two feet deep. I spit, and a spot of bright red blood landed on the green lawn.
I picked up my camera and checked it to make sure it was still working. Looking around, I didn’t see anyone. I waited until my head stopped spinning, then crept up to the window. They were still going at it on the table. I took some pictures, but had to wait for them to shift positions so I could get his face. After a few minutes, I had all I needed.
A sudden noise behind me caused me to turn around. A white-haired woman with binoculars hanging from her neck stuck her head out of the window of the house next door.
“You clumsy cow,” she shouted at me. “Get out of the way. You’re blocking the view.”
I retreated in a hurry, and she raised the binoculars, trained on the window through which I’d been snapping pictures.
Case closed. I walked back to the Tube and went home, holding a handkerchief to my still-bleeding mouth.
My Review
My Rating: 4 Stars
“Dark versus Light, Evil versus Good… the war raged on, intense and to the death, hidden away from the wary eyes of humanity.”
An excellent read for fans of action-packed fantasy with a strong female lead, Dreams of the Cursed is a great follow-up to the first book in the series.
Chantal is not a damsel in distress, far from it actually. She’s tough, smart, and brave. She has faced and conquered so many obstacles in her young life, including the revelation that she is of a race she never imagined when she thought she was merely a human. She’s a fighter and a leader, but still a girl, still touched by romance. Chantal is funny and real, with an entertaining and accessible voice and perspective and I rooted for her throughout the whole story.
The book has a well-realized and fully fleshed out fantasy elements. The plot has tons of action and is very fast moving, but the world building is still smoothly integrated in to the story. The reader is provided a clear picture of this often frightening fantasy realm that exists alongside our own and the beings that inhabit it: some good, some evil, and some we just can’t be sure of just yet.
This book succeeds as a second book in a series: it answers the questions of the first book, while providing more question to be answered in another story. I do think that reading Legacy of a Dreamer, book #1 in the series, will make this book more enjoyable, but the author does a good job of providing some background so that first time readers won’t be completely stranded. We get to know the characters better and are drawn even deeper in to their world, personal relationships, and emotions, leaving the reader invested in and eagerly anticipating what is to come next in this series.
Excerpt
A gust of cold air burst through my body, tightening every muscle and clenching my lungs. The feeling was always the same, and it only came when I thought of that place…when the memories were thicker than the lessons I had learned by leaving there.
I set both brushes in a jar of water and walked across the hall to the apartment. Then I moved through the kitchen, my hands yanking at my sweater, lifting it over my head and releasing it once I got to the entryway of the bedroom. I peeled off my black skinny jeans until I reached my knee-high boots and dropped both along with my pants in front of the bathroom sinks. My panties and bra fell before I stepped into the shower and turned on the water.
The wall of glass that separated the shower from the rest of the bathroom began to fog, and the marble under my feet turned warm. Windows spanned both sides, overlooking different sections of the Back Bay; below the ledges were niches that held our bottles of shampoo and body wash, and benches for us to sit on. The back wall was a mosaic, an abstract. Water shot out from every direction, spraying from all sides as well as the ceiling. There were even streams below that covered my feet.
My skin was sweating now. Drops of scalding water ran off my body. The places that were being hit directly by the jets had turned a bright red. But it couldn’t stop the chill that continued to spread beneath my flesh.
Six months had passed since I’d left the mansion. I didn’t think about it as much as I used to, but when something instigated those thoughts—something like the mirrored floor in the painting—I had a hard time calming them down again. I still wasn’t sure how I was supposed to process what I had done there, what I had allowed to happen and how much I had once enjoyed it. Part of me didn’t want to take it back; part of me could barely keep down the bile that threatened to rise when I remembered. But that time in my life had gotten me here. And I was here, unlike some of the girls I had shared that house with.
I moved closer to one of the shower heads and pressed my hands against the cold marble that tiled the wall, leaning into the stream of water. It massaged the top of my head.
Breathe.
The drops that filled my ears blocked any noise that was around me. I could taste the product that drizzled from my hair—the spray I had used to hold my curls and the oil that gave it shine. My eyes closed and I inhaled the steam, trying to find a place of relaxation.
A place where the images and the screams would quiet to a dull moan.
And just as I found it, just as my palms no longer kneaded against the stone and my back didn’t pump and arch to find that place of complete comfort, just as I had finally gotten used to the temperature of the water, his arms wrapped around my chest. His hands cupped each of my breasts, his thumbs grazing my nipples.
“Why didn’t you wake me?” he whispered into my neck. His lips followed his words to my skin, his tongue circling the spot just to the side of my throat. It didn’t matter how often he had roamed my body, or how many times, it still felt so new, so unexpected.
“You need your sleep…” I told him. As soon as he touched me, I completely lost my voice. All I had were my desires, and they consumed me.
“I need you more,” he breathed.
My Review
My Rating: 5+ Stars
“What if Cee was really the soul of me, and Charlie was just another mask I wore?”
This book is one that have been anxiously waiting to read from the moment I knew that it would exist; and I’m absolutely ecstatic to say that it did not disappoint. The reader gets to see in to Charlie’s soul as she struggles with her new life after the mansion. She no longer feels the weight of poverty and abuse and has an amazing man in her life: a man whose dark past and bright future rivals her own. The story is deliciously dark, gritty, and sexy; intense emotions, both ecstasy and despair, mesh perfectly with a suspenseful and engaging story. The plot itself, with its twists and surprises, is compelling enough. But, what makes this book truly special is the artistic style to Mann’s writing: scenes described with a sensual artistic quality using beautifully realized colors, textures, and details.
I was impressed by how much Charlie’s character has grown. She is stronger and braver, she still struggles, but is trying to come to terms with her demons, to find comfort, stability and love. But this story is not only about Charlie. It’s also about the people around her and the relationships she is forging. Now that she is not simply surviving, but actually living, she is connecting with people on more than just a sexual level. She is forced reconcile these new found connections with her past and her future, and moving forward will not be easy.
We are introduced to a whole new cast of well-realized secondary characters. I truly enjoyed getting to know new angels and enemies, and witnessing new stories of darkness and light, of tragedy and triumph. Especially Cameron; He is my perfect broken hero. Gorgeous and damaged and sexually insatiable, his connection with Charlie is undeniable and I loved seeing the evolution of their relationship, in spite of nearly insurmountable obstacles.
“I tilted my head, looking in to the crystal clarity that stared back at me. The only thing cold about him was the blue of his eyes. Everything about Cameron spoke of his warmth. ‘Do you think I’m crazy?’
‘No,’ I said as I shook my head. ‘I think you’re wonderful.’ “
I must admit, I am such an enormous fan of Seductive Shadows that it would be nearly impossible to top that book for me. I highly recommend reading it first; the background is necessary to fully enjoy this book (and it’s an AMAZING read!!). Seductive Secrecy is it’s own story, though. We have a new Charlie, with glimpses of Cee, but this Charlie is more accessible and I feel that this book has a more relatable quality. It is heartbreaking and intense, but the pinpoints of light are just a bit brighter in this installment. These books, with their perfect combination of romance, sex, suspense, devastating darkness, and brilliant hope have captured my heart and soul.
“Maybe I should stare at the sky more often. Maybe I should enjoy the night air instead of shielding myself from it. Rather than letting the the never-ending blackness overwhelm me, maybe I should appreciate it for what it is; a background for the brilliance of stars. After all, without darkness there can’t be light.”
*I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Author Interview
1.     Seductive Secrecy is the sequel to Seductive Shadows, how does it differ from the first book?
Seductive Secrecy really focuses on Charlie and Cameron’s relationship, if they’re able to move on and grow from everything that happened while they were together as well as what had occurred in their pasts. Of course, with the sequel comes a whole new set of problems and they either have to weave through them together or the issues will drive them apart.
2.     What character have readers asked you the most about? Which left an impression on them, and did it surprise you?
Cameron is the most asked about character: who inspired his looks, is he based on someone I know, will he receive his own story? I would also say he’s left the strongest impression on my readers. Cameron has haunted me for a while (he still does!), so I can’t say I’m surprised by their curiosity. I’m more intrigued by their questions, if anything.
3.     What is the best personality trait of your heroine, Charlie?  Worst personality trait?
Underneath Charlie’s mask, her scars, her erotic behavior, is a survivor. She truly has an instinctive will to survive regardless of what she’s faced with. Her worst personality trait is that she’s fearless.
 4.     Did you know how Seductive Secrecy was going to end, before you wrote it? It was quite the shocker!
Ha! Thank you! 🙂 I knew the main events that were going to take place, but the details weren’t flushed out until I wrote the actual ending. Because the ending is so layered, those points were smoothed out even more during the editing process.
5.     Is there a message in the Shadows Series that you want readers to walk away with? If so, what is it?
It’s always darkest before the dawn.
6.     Will there be a third book? What can we expect in the next installment?
As of right now, there is no plan for a third book. I did write a short story in Cameron’s point-of-view that readers can receive by purchasing a copy of Seductive Secrecy before November 1st (details are here: http://marnismann.com/claim-your-electronic-copy-of-camerons-point-of-view/) My next release is tentatively scheduled for January and it’s a New Adult title.
7.     Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?
Write as much as you can. Every writer has his or her own unique voice and it’s impossible to find that voice unless you experiment. My other piece of advice is read everything you can get your hands on because behind every great writer is a great reader.
She was meant to be his destruction…
A pawn played in a perilous game between
father and son…
Yet, her strength was more than either
man could imagine.
As Maddy learns to save herself…
She becomes the one thing that could
set the son free.
Madeleine Clark was raised to become a concert cellist. Sheltered and naïve, she remains hidden behind her music, a protection from the world around her. On the night of her first solo performance, Maddy accepts the admiration of a stranger and finds herself captive in a cruel and twisted power struggle between a sadistic father and his son, Aaron.
Seemingly, dangerous and uncaring, Aaron manages the business operations of his father’s estate. Wanting nothing to do with the slaves kept at the Estate, Aaron refuses to take part in the deeper depravities of his father. Despite his resistance, Aaron’s father ‘gifts’ him with a petite, brunette woman he can’t refuse.
A bond forged in conspiracy and deceit, Aaron struggles to save Maddy by teaching her to survive in the world in which he’d been raised.  Aaron stopped with his bare back turned to her, taking several minutes to finally respond, he asked, “What makes you think you are allowed to ask that?  If I wanted, I could call you slave…”  He turned to face her, the contours of chest perfectly shadowed, his strength unquestionable.  “…or whore.”  His swagger was slow as he approached her, a hunter skilled in pursuit.  “Would you prefer those names to ‘Mouse’?”
 Sucking her bottom lip between her teeth, Maddy fidgeted with her hands, refusing to look Aaron in the eyes.  She could feel his gaze touching her skin, his perusal of the woman barely half his size.  The heat of his body rolled off of him as he circled her.  It was the feeling of a soft blanket and lustful threat wrapped around her at the same time.  When the deep resonation of his voice occurred again, she cringed, fearing he would strike out at her for the incorrect answer.  “Why do you dislike the name I have given you?”
 Continuing to fidget, Maddy trained her eyes on her feet, not daring to look up into the endless green she knew stared down at her.  Gripping her under her chin, Aaron pulled her face up to look at him, his eyes searching hers for the answer to his question.  “You will speak when I tell you.”  Dropping his hand from her face, he took a step back placing distance between them.  “Now answer me.”
 Her heart pounded against the walls of her chest, her throat constricted, making it difficult for her to breath.  Fear consumed her as she stood in the shadow of the man who’d taken at least two lives that day.  Barely a whisper, her voice squeaked out the answer to his question. “Because a mouse is a furry little rodent, something detested.”
 Aaron stood thoughtful and silent above her.  When he didn’t respond, Maddy quietly added, “I guess it’s better than Xander’s name for me.”
 Laughter bellowed out, causing the toned muscles of Aaron’s broad chest to flex and relax before her eyes.  The sound of his amusement so real, it caused her to want to smile in response to seeing a piece of his mask falling away, revealing parts of him not witnessed by many people.  Containing himself, Aaron’s eyes sparkled as he asked, “And what, exactly, is Xander’s name for you?”
 A scowl creased the fine skin between her eyes, her mouth pulled into the pout of a sulking child.  “He calls me ‘cricket’…an insect.  It’s odd that you both refer to me as nothing more than a common household pest.”
 Aaron’s smile faltered as he looked down upon the beautiful girl who didn’t fully understand her role.  “No, Madeleine, you are not a common household pest…”
 Maddy looked up at him, anticipating what he would say next.
 For a fleeting second, he looked genuinely amused, but his expression was quickly replaced with indifference and contempt as he stated, “you are lower than even a pest in your role as a slave.”
My Review
My Rating: 5 Stars
“Her name is Madeleine Clark, and when she was abducted, she was not only dragged in to hell… She took over.”
I LOVED this book. From the first sentences to the ending, I was held captive along with Madeleine; taken prisoner by this story, breathtaking in its darkness, violence, and glimmers of hope.
The story’s engaging and well realized characters taught me a few things…
Never underestimate an introvert. Don’t mistake the quiet shyness of a pure, innocent, talented, and artistic woman as weakness. She may hold a strength that not only can withstand torture and abuse at the hands of evil men, but the power within herself to topple an entire criminal empire headed by a madman.
“Such bravery for a woman who faced the unknown; it amazed him to see that her heart had changed form that of a mouse into that of a lion in a matter of weeks, that her strength was enough to heal them both.”
 Conversely, don’t underestimate the emotions of a cold-blooded assassin. He may be without remorse for his killing, but he is not without the capacity for love; and that love may be the one thing that can truly guide him in his quest for power and ultimately redemption.
 “Aaron’s beauty was a wicked veil; mystifying and lulling those that looked upon him into a false sense of awe, only to have security ripped from them when they saw the menace lurking beneath.”
This book also taught me that even in places of complete darkness, there is light. The flow of the story is much like Maddy’s life in the The Estate: a bleak and horrifying nightmare, but with moments of light and hope. This book is not for the faint of heart. It has slavery, unimaginable violence, drugs, and scenes that made me cringe and squirm. But there were also moments that took my breath away with their tenderness and beauty. The book is emotional, heart-wrenching, and full of suspense and tension. The writing has a musical quality, a complement to the musician at the center of the story. This is a brilliant read, the book complete in itself, but I can not wait for more of the story.
“She is light while I am darkness…”
“Tell me again how we ended up here. And speak slowly so I can understand every word you say.” A muscle clenched in his jaw.
“Well.” She might have preferred Campbell not bringing up her tendency to rush through speech when she felt nervous. “I think I may have, completely unintentionally of course, zapped us here.”
“You. Zapped. Us. Here.” He nodded in between each word like he needed to make sense of all of them individually before he could move on. He ran a hand through his dark hair. Strands she herself had once caressed on a nightly basis before he’d gone and decided to marry her sister, thus destroying her life.
“Exactly.” She hitched up her pink monstrosity of a dress and walked toward the inviting waves. The sea air tingled against her skin.
Campbell grabbed her arm. “Olive White, you’ve never successfully performed one spell. Not even one.”
“Yes, you would know that since you were with me every single time I bumbled one. The worst witch in witching school.” She hated that phrase and obviously, she’d made a spell work. Even if she hadn’t meant to. Maybe she could finally lose the nickname.
“Yes.” He smiled at her, letting her arm go. For a second, she saw his brown eyes sparkle like they had when he used to look at her, in the days before the whole world had shifted sideways. But then as fast as the adoration had appeared it vanished. “Well, since you can suddenly make the gift of the ancestors work, zap us back.”
Campbell tapped his foot on the sand like she should hurry up and get the job done. She stifled a laugh, covering her mouth with her hand, at the image he portrayed.
He still wore his tuxedo. In the sand.
Dark hair, dark eyes, and dressed in a designer tuxedo, complete with a black bowtie that had to have been Cindy’s idea, he stood on the beach looking like a fish that had suddenly found itself in a bird’s nest. He really didn’t belong in his current habitat. At least not dressed like that.
Olive covered her mouth to hide her smile. Campbell always fit in wherever he went and even though it seemed mean to laugh, especially because it was her fault that he’d landed on the beach, she couldn’t help but find amusement in how uncomfortable he appeared. After her months of pain, he deserved the hours ahead of him.
He stood waiting for her to answer his declaration. Her sister’s fiancé wanted her to bring them back immediately if not sooner.
“I can’t undo the spell, Campbell. And I’m not sorry about it. Not even a little bit.”
Then they attacked the water supply, killing one-third of Earth’s population with a bitter contaminate. My Review
My Rating: 4 Stars
“One year ago. It didn’t seem like such a long time, just three little words when she considered it. But it seemed like more like a lifetime ago when the water was drinkable, the sun would shine in its full glory, and her parents were…”
 Sanctuary tells the story of a group of people who are thrown together as the world is ending. The planet as we know it has been ravaged by aliens and a zombie-like virus, and there is only a handful of survivors. It will take bravery, wits, and faith for this unlikely family to find a safe haven and survive, and some of them won’t make it.
Though I felt the most connection with Jennie and her story, the author also chronicles the stories of other survivors, from their own point of views, as fate pushes them towards one another. The plot moves very quickly, pages fly by as you read each individual’s experience, but Jennie’s courage and kindness stuck with me the most. A year ago she was a college student, now she is a single mom to her little brother in a deadly, crumbling society: her transition is difficult but admirable. She may waver, but it is only for a moment, and then she accomplishes whatever needs to be done, regardless of the danger. She maintains her resolve through her faith, something that so many people have lost in the horrors that they have faced. In fact, it is her faith that provides and an interesting plot twist. Her faith combined with the work and observations of scientists may hold the key to saving humanity, but the solution remains out of reach.
Jennie connects with and becomes a quiet leader to those around her. She forges a blossoming relationship with the Hugh, and though they have an age difference, it really doesn’t seem like a big deal when the world is ending. Their story together seems to have just begun, as does the much larger picture.  This exciting and action-packed plot is only beginning; we now know and are invested in these characters and their futures. Though the book has a satisfying ending where many questions are answered, more are posed. Most importantly: what is to become of this planet, and these few but intriguing people that now inhabit it?
It didn’t matter that the ref called it a clean hit. Nico Hunter would never be the same.
Elle has a good life. A job she loves, a great apartment, and the guy she’s been dating for more than two years is a catch and a half.  But it’s boring…and she strives to keep it that way. Too many emotions are dangerous. Her own past is living proof of what can happen when you lose control.
Then Nico walks into Elle’s office and everything changes…for both of them. But what can the tattooed, hard-bodied MMA fighter and the beautiful and always steady attorney have in common? A lot more than they bargained for
My Review
My Rating: 4.5 Stars
“His breath is so close to my ear when he speaks, I feel the words throughout my body as he speaks them. ‘But when I finally get you underneath me, I’m definitely not going to treat you like a lady.’ “
*Shivers*. That what Nico Hunter does to me, gives me the chills, makes me tingle all over. He’s smokin’ hot, tattooed, possessive, sweet, and broken. Though you may not see it on the surface, Elle is broken, too. They have more in common than they realize, but their dark pasts threaten to tear them apart. This a fantastically sexy story, a great romance, and a difficult journey towards healing and understanding.
Keeland writes a romance that transitions easily from dual points of view. Both main characters are given a unique voice and perspective, but the flow of the story stays perfectly intact. I enjoyed each voice equally, his rough and hers a bit more refined, but their feelings were clear: this thing that is brewing between them could change their lives forever.
The chemistry is absolutely sizzling, and the sex scenes are super hot. Nico is a possessive alpha-male both in the bedroom and out. Elle is a great match for him: smart, sassy, and determined. I loved this couple together and was so pleased that the author let their relationship start to solidify somewhat early in the book. The reader gets to spend time with Elle and Nico; we get to experience their blissful happiness, the difficulties that occur when their pasts come back to haunt them, and the intense emotions that come along with facing demons and finding love, healing and redemption.
I truly enjoyed Nico and Elle’s story: the juxtaposition between the rough fighter and lawyer with the polished exterior. This is a complete story, carrying the reader from the relationship’s sizzling early chemistry, to a tentative romance, times of difficulty, a tear-jerking climax, and a hopeful conclusion. The author promises more books in this series, and I can’t wait to read the next one.
“God, the man is beautiful. And not just on the outside… on the inside too… and he doesn’t even have to try. It’s just who he is. Underneath 220 pound of tattooed hard muscle that screams trouble is the most sensitive and beautiful soul I’ve ever met. For the first time since I was eight years old I feel like the luckiest girl on the planet.”
About the Book
Senator Maxwell Joseph has it all—money, power and good looks—the trifecta when it comes to attracting the ladies. He even has women willing to be tied up, spanked and fucked all while calling him Daddy, fulfilling his secret fantasy. On the night of his thirty-fifth birthday he finds a goddess waiting for him in his hotel room. She is beautiful, sexy and very willing, yet the fruit she offers is very forbidden. Not only at nineteen is she barely legal, but she is the daughter of his best friend and political advisor.
Mackenzie Wade has had a crush on the senator for years, and when an overheard phone call affords her the opportunity she needs to make her fantasies a reality, she jumps on the chance offering herself as a birthday gift.
Throwing caution to the wind, Max gives in to temptation and gives them both what they have been yearning for—a night filled with ropes, floggers and toe-curling sex. Although satiated, one night of passion wasn’t enough for either of them, and they began a clandestine affair.
The solid ground on which he’d built his career now began to shift as his wants and dreams for the future began to change. In what he can only describe as a landslide, Max hold on tight to the only thing that he can, Kenzie, and goes on the ride of his life, knowing all along that in the end, he may have to make a choice between the woman of his fantasies and his career.
My Review
“In the past, I’d known what I’d wanted with my pets and they had all been extremely willing and able- bought and paid for- but Mackenzie was different. She didn’t have to play by my rules, and that little detail made me want her more than anything I’d ever wanted.”
This sexy, entertaining story begins when two people seek one another to fulfill their fantasies, and before long, it becomes clear that they connection they have is something much more.
If you are completely turned off by Daddy/little girl relationships, then this book is not for you. (Keep in mind, this relationship exists between consenting adults!) But, if you’re on the fence, or know that you enjoy that particular relationship dynamic, along with spanking and SUPER HOT sex, then this book is for you. Max and Kenzie’s relationship begins with just sex, like, some “one-handed reading” type of sex, but as they begin to realize they have deeper feelings for one another, I also realized I had been rooting for them all along. I enjoyed them as Daddy and little girl, and loved the progression to Maxwell and Kenzie. But theirs is a forbidden romance, he is high powered politician and she is the nineteen year old daughter of his political advisor. But the risk seems worth it: they have it all, an amazing sexual chemistry, and a beautiful romance. But theirs is a precarious situation… will their love be strong enough?
The author does a very good job of using both main character’s points of view; I enjoyed the balance it gave to the tone and emotion of the story. This is a great book for those that enjoy a sweet and spicy read, with a bit of kink, plenty of hot sex, and unlikely but heartwarming romance.
“It couldn’t be more wrong, yet everything felt so right.”
When it comes to tattooed bad boys, Chase Gartner is the real deal. Partying, engaging in meaningless sex, getting into fights—Chase indulges in it all during his late teen years, thus firmly solidifying his status as a heartbreakingly gorgeous but way-too-dangerous-to-trust guy in his hometown of Harmony Creek, Ohio. Then, following one fateful night of reckless decisions, Chase’s actions finally catch up to him and land him in prison.
Now, four years have passed and Chase finds himself a free man. He returns to Harmony Creek, ready to pick up the pieces and start rebuilding his shattered life.
Things are off to a promising start when he meets Kay Stanton, a young woman with a tragic past of her own. Despite a powerful attraction, Chase and Kay are naturally hesitant to become involved. My Review
My Rating: 5 Stars
“As I stand before you, judge me not.”
I Stand Before You is a  brilliant combination of darkness and light, love and friendship, utter despair and blinding hope. A story of a relationship that on the surface seems unlikely, where it quickly becomes obvious that these two people were made for each other.
This story of friendship turned love is told from both Chase’s and Kay’s points of view, and the author executes this flawlessly. Both main characters possess a unique voice, illustrating how different they are, and also how much they are the same. Chase and Kay are each broken in their own way. As their relationship moves from easy friendship laced with underlying chemistry to an intense romance, they begin to heal. Their clear love and acceptance of one another is something neither have ever really experienced, and it’s salve on old wounds.
One of my favorite things about this book is the way the author combines hardness and softness, darkness and light. Chase is the ultimate hard-ass bad, boy: good-looking, sexy as hell, with a checkered past, and tons of ink, but there’s a softness when it comes to Kay. And Kay, the beautiful, soft girly-girl has had to develop a hard-shell just to survive what life has thrown her way. This hard/soft combination is evident throughout the book. The story itself is perfectly balanced. Just when I thought it might become sticky sweet, there’s just enough turmoil to balance it out. Kay’s kind voice is balanced with Chace’s much rougher tone, and beautifully romantic lovemaking is balanced with down and dirty fucking. Both sides of the story are equally satisfying.
This is a story of overcoming past demons and learning to live again. It’s a book filled with friendship and laughter, drugs and violence, healing, redemption, sinners, saints, death, and a love that could change everything. I was completely engaged in these two character’s intense emotions, their struggles and triumphs, and rooting for them all the way. This part of Kay and Chase’s narrative is complete in its own right, but there are new conflicts on the horizon, and I can’t wait to follow them in to the next chapter of their lives.
“If Chase’s wings are broken, then mine are shattered. Maybe that’s why we work so well together, why we have from the very beginning. Some things are meant to be, and Chase and I have been destined from day one. We are two broken people who, when put together, become whole.”
