Dangerous Dreams

The Dreamrunners Society, Book One

Aileen Harkwood

Genre: Paranormal/Romantic Suspense

Number of pages: estimated 220 pages

Word Count: 65K

Sometimes danger comes in a dream…

Plagued by nightmares of terrorist bombings, Lara Freberg is a so-called Lost One, unaware of her psychic gift for literally being in two places at once. While her true body sleeps, her twin is helplessly drawn to scenes of unspeakable horror. Kidnapped by a corrupt, CIA-like organization determined to exploit her abilities, Lara is given no choice. Cooperate or die. Until the midnight spying missions that make her the willing prisoner of an erotic stranger. Does she dare trust him with her warning of a future attack on American soil?

Jack Mayfield will never forgive himself for being too late to free Lara from the Greys, sworn enemies of The Dreamrunners Society. An elite front line operative, Jack is able to find and save the Lost Ones no one else can. Nothing, however, can prepare him for the shock of losing the woman who holds the key to unlocking his war weary heart. Now Jack is in a race for her life. Lara’s dreaming half may be able to drive him wild with passion, but can he believe her when she says the Greys haven’t turned her against him and the Society?

It won’t be easy to rescue his one true love from certain death.

Note: Dangerous Dreams is expanded from and inspired by the short story “In Her Dreams,” by Aileen Harkwood.

My Review

My Rating: 5 Stars!

“She wanted. She wanted so much she couldn’t have. A haven. Raw sex. Understanding. Wildness. She had no idea what this was, if she was really here, if he existed, if there were one or two of her or him. She didn’t think about the interrogation room or Grey Man. Lara simply didn’t care. At this moment, she felt instinctively safe in the arms of the man who claimed her lips with ruthless passion.”

Dark and captivating, with a story and characters that get under your skin, and a reality intermingled with dreams and frightening nightmares, Dangerous Dreams is the start to what is sure to become one of my favorite series. Violence and political intrigue lurk in the shadows of an intense romance forged by an undeniable and mysterious connection between two Dreamrunners, or humans with a special ability to leave their bodies and travel instantly to distant places. Lara does not know that she is special, and Jack must save her from those that will torture and even kill her for her gift.

The story is fast-paced and filled with action and surprising plot twists. The author does an excellent job of weaving important information about the Dreamrunners in to the flow of the story. Facts are revealed in perfect timing with the action, just enough to make sense, but never too much to be overwhelming. The ins and outs of being a Dreamrunner could become complicated or confusing, but it’s a seamless part of the story.

I could not put this book down. Lara and Jack’s mysterious connection is filled with heat and passion, and I was instantly engaged in their story, desperate for them to find and save each other. They offer each other a safe place, a connection the neither have ever had with another person. It is clear that their story is just beginning; that they will need all of the strength that they have shown and more to survive what is to come. I am hopelessly invested in this couple and and desperate to read more of their story and continue the story of The Society, Dreamrunners, and the Lost Ones.

“They would live or they would die, but they would do it together.”

Lara opened her eyes and found herself standing at the foot of a bed with a rust-colored spread. She recognized this place immediately as the room, the one in the photograph they’d shown her. Pain radiated up her right arm to her chest from the last touch of the electrodes, reminding her what would happen if she didn’t obey.

How had she gotten here? Was this yet another dream? A hallucination? All of it looked so real, felt real, like she was really here. Why would they want her to dream about this room?

“You see the window?” someone said to her.

Lara started nervously, the voice rattling her. It sounded as if he was inches from her ear, but when she turned her head to look, no one was there.

She heard another noise, so slight she thought she might have imagined it. She glanced toward the room’s bed.

Someone was watching her. A man.

She cried out in surprise, or tried to, but nothing came out of her mouth. Her voice didn’t exist here.

From a prone position, head on a pillow, he bolted upright to a sitting position. His hand shot toward the nightstand. Lara saw a gun there and shrank back in fear, but when he reached for it, he couldn’t grasp or pick up the firearm.

He tried again, but could not lift it free.

Frustrated, he turned back toward her. He was in the darkest part of the room and she couldn’t make out his features.

“The window,” Grey Man’s disembodied voice hissed in her ear. “Go to the window.”

Lara was in a near fugue state, her mind overwhelmed. She didn’t know where she was. Was she here in this place that seemed so real? Or back in the cell with Grey Man? She didn’t feel right. She didn’t feel real. Panic ignited along her spine, telling her she was about to die. It stripped away any coherent thought.

Please. She didn’t know what she begged for, only that she begged.

“Go. To. The. Window.”

Lara started to obey.

“Stop!” the man on the bed shouted. He leapt to his feet, but didn’t come closer. “Don’t move,” he ordered.

Deep, rumbling, his voice startled her. She froze in place, apparently willing to take orders from anyone now.

“Not a muscle,” the man said. “I’m deadly serious. What you’re doing, you’re not doing it right. You’ve put yourself in danger by coming here like this.”

He took another step forward, edging into the golden light.

It’s him.
The man she’d hallucinated in her bedroom.
He’s real?
Like the first time she’d seen him, he wore jeans and nothing else, the ripple of toned abs on display as he stalked toward her. She’d glimpsed only a little of his face the first time, but she saw the same panther-black hair and granite set to his jaw. Only this time she noticed that one of his cheeks, the left one, wasn’t quite right, the bones slightly out of alignment with the rest of his face. It didn’t look entirely natural. Had he been in an accident? His cheekbone shattered some time in the past?

His dark eyes remained in shadow, refusing to tell her whether or not she could trust him. The glow she’d seen around him in her bedroom was still there, reflecting off his smoothly muscled chest.

Pain shot through Lara. Back in the cell, where they kept her body, Grey Man used the car battery again. Her muscles and joints contracted, convulsed, the fire of electricity burning its way up her arm, reaching for her brain. Her heart stopped. She couldn’t breathe.

“The window, Lara,” Grey Man said. “Or this continues.”

She started toward the rust-colored drapes.

The man with black hair vaulted over the bed and suddenly blocked her way. He put a hand up to gesture for her to stop, but didn’t touch her.

“Your body isn’t stable,” he said. “I know you probably don’t know what I’m talking about, but every step you take while you’re like this has the potential to kill you. You can’t touch anything here.”

Though taller than most women, Lara was forced to look up into his face. Their eyes met, and as had happened in her bedroom, recognition clicked. She knew him. She’d found him without ever having known she was looking. He was really there. Standing in front of her.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” he said. “I want to help you.”

Joy soared through her for the briefest fraction of a second.

“An evil man lives in that room,” Grey Man whispered in her ear. “A terrorist. You’re there to find out his location, where he’s hiding.”

About the Book

City of the Fallen

Dark Tides #1

By: Diana Bocco

Five years ago, vampires came out of hiding and took over the world. It was meant to be a quick enslavement but it turned into a bloody battle that brought humanity to the brink of extinction.

Isabelle Bryant is one of the “lucky” survivors, now living in hiding, scavenging for food through deserted towns.

And she’s tired of it.

So she’s devised a plan: find the king of the vampires and drive a stake through his heart.

Except that wickedly sensual king Marcus is nothing like the monster she expected. And while landing on his bed was part of the plan all along, discovering that he might hold the key to humanity’s survival certainly wasn’t. The catch? Saving humanity also means ensuring vampire survival. It means giving up hope for a return to a human-ruled world.

As sparks fly and hate becomes heat, Isabelle must pick a side — before the darkness devours them all.

My Review

My Rating: 4.5 Stars

“Funny how things could change so quickly in a question of days. Funny how your heart could change sides before you even realized it had happened.”

I truly enjoyed reading this fast-paced, exciting, and sexy book. It’s a HOT vampire romance with a post-apocalyptic spin, an action-packed plot, and plenty of twists, turns, and surprises.

I am a definite fan of a sexy, dangerous vampire as a lead, and Marcus (the king of the vampires) does not disappoint! The author does an excellent job of creating a monster with a heart, a terrifying vampire with a thoughtful humanity and a soft spot for Isabelle. He is full of contradictions but with her he does not waver: she will be his. Their instant connection heats up the pages and together they are ON FIRE! Be prepared for some sizzling sex! And as the story moves forward it becomes increasingly clear that their feelings are more than sexual, and that their potential partnership will affect the future of the world’s populations, both human and vampire. Together, they may be able to save what is left of a crumbling world, but just when they truly realize how much they mean to each other, it seems time is running out.

This is a fantastic first book in a series. I am intensely invested in the main characters and their uncertain future. Many questions are answered and many more are raised. What will happen to Marcus, Isabelle, and to humanity in general? A dramatic conclusion left me breathless and the fates hanging in the balance, and I’m desperate to read the next book in this very promising series.

“She exhaled, her soul surrendering. It was a lost battle, trying to deny how she felt. It had been a lost battle for a long time- maybe from the time he touched her. She had been denying her feelings because they seemed like a betrayal to the entire human race, but denying them was a betrayal to her own soul.”

About the Author

I’ve been a fan of all kinds of dark creatures since I was a kid (even before I discovered Stephen King at the age of 10). If it crawls in the night and tugs at your covers while you’re sleeping, chances are I’ve written about it. It’s probably no surprise that I’m a big fan of old buildings, urban exploring and things that go bump in the night. Oh, and Halloween, of course — but that should go without saying.

Growing up, I wanted to be Indiana Jones. I ended up not pursuing a degree in Archaeology (although I toyed with the idea for a while) but I did become a huge lover of travel and history. Aside from traveling to all corners of the world, I’ve also lived in five countries in three continents — including three years in Siberia and two in Vietnam. I’m currently living in Thailand.

I have a soft spot for animals (which is why you can be sure that in my stories, the dog will always make it) and right now have three wonderful — but slightly crazy — dogs in my life. And yes, they move with me from country to country. Too bad dogs can’t accumulate frequent flyer miles!

In my other life, I also write nonfiction: articles, books, and even quizzes for the Discovery Channel website. I really can’t help it — I’m a nerd at heart and love research and discovering new things. Could be the Indiana Jones in me pushing me along.

When it comes to life, I’m pretty fearless. I figure life is too short to live it too safely — so I take risks and I try to have fun, whether that means snowshoeing in the middle of Siberia or going ghost-hunting in an abandoned asylum. And yes, I’ve done both.

My Review

My Rating: 3.5 Stars

” ‘Can two people really meet and decide after on e night they need to be together?’

‘Of course they can.’ I tell her.

‘I don’t believe in fairytales, though.’

‘When you’re talking to one of the big bad wolves, I think it’s okay to believe in fairy tales.’ “

Little Red is a good read for anyone who enjoys a creative twist on familiar fairy tales.

When Sam’s motorcycle runs out of gas in the middle of nowhere Louisiana, she’s rescued by the sexy and handsome Ethan Parker. An intense attraction brings them in to each other’s arms before Ethan is able to share a very important and dangerous secret. But the wheels of fate are already in motion, and these two lives will be forever connected.

One of my favorite parts of this book is the cast of lovable characters. Of course there’s Ethan, our troubled, sexy hero, who is fighting to be the good man he so desperately wants to be. He (and Sam, or “Red” as she comes to be called) are surrounded by his brothers: funny, protective, loving, and caring; the family Sam never had but wanted more than anything. Sam’s character is a little weak for my tastes but she does show strength when necessary, and she provides a good balance for Ethan.

The story tumbles along, there’s some action and secrets unravel. Red leaves Ethan after their initial meeting, and he must find her and rescue her, and they begin to work on making this strange, unplanned relationship work. There’s some ups and downs, but I was definitely rooting for this couple. The book has a slight lull in the middle, the action wanes and situations become a bit repetitive, but the story picks up in the end. The reader is rewarded with a heart-pounding climax and a lovely, emotional conclusion: a happily ever after befitting this romantic, sometimes dark, but ultimately hopeful fairy tale.

“Things might be a little crazy, things might be a little unconventional but being together seems right , no matter what the circumstances are.”

About the Book

All it takes is one mistake to be marked. One bite, she crosses a line…into forever.

Diana Hambre’s body is blazing. For days this leopardess shifter has spun through a body-searing heat cycle. Alone. Her senses reel when Shawn Barclay, her boss, walks into her reserved room at the Downtown Den, a stud club for shifters. He gives Diana a choice: spend the evening with him, give into his every desire, and she’ll find out what it means to quench her heat-crazed thirst—or try her luck with a stranger, one of the club bangers.

Shawn hates when his back is against the wall. One sip of Diana’s pheromone-laced scent is enough to force his alpha hand. The tables have turned and it’s Diana’s back he wants up against a wall, or any other surface for that matter.

As the moon rises toward midnight, Shawn and Diana come to understand the difference between sex and bonding. For a night, neither of them resist their primal instincts, blindly giving into carnal desire. Her wild nature fights being subdued and she risks spontaneously shifting without warning.

Now, bearing Shawn’s bite marks, she can’t simply walk away from him; not when he has the means to teach her to harness her leopardess nature. Shawn accepts the challenge of training Diana to control her untamed cravings. Employing every method available in and out of the bedroom, he discovers he’s on the verge of ensnaring himself in the process.

Warning: Erotic scenes hot enough to peel paint.

My Review

My Rating: 5 Big Stars!

” ‘You’re right about this being about sex. But sex is power, make no mistake.’ “

From the intense and sexually charged first pages, to the romantic finale, I LOVED THIS BOOK. It is scorchingly HOT: a fantastic mix of shifters, human emotion, fantastically written sex scenes, all darkly tinged with power, dominance, and submission.

What should have been one night becomes so much more; it becomes everything. Before we even even meet Shawn, the sexual tension in Diana’s first scenes is positively sizzling, and when Shawn enters, the real fireworks start. This book is filled with fantastic sex scenes: at times sensual, and other times edgy and gritty, but always mind-blowing.

I enjoyed every bit of this book, not just the sex. The shifter storyline was woven seamlessly through the human storyline and I soon forgot this was a “shifter book”. Diana and Shawn must face their pasts in order to be together. They must accept their true selves and find a way for two very strong personalities to mesh, despite uncertainties and misgivings. I am crazy about Shawn’s sexy, dominate, protectiveness. He is an extremely strong character; he has to be, if he has any chance at taming the nearly equally strong-willed and powerful Diane.

This book as a whole: sex, plot, action, and romance is intense to say the least. I was captivated from beginning to end. Already a fan of this author, I love how I’m once again impressed by her ability to draw the reader completely in to whichever amazing, unique story she chooses to create for us.

” ‘Your first mistake was believing I’d be fair. When it comes to having you… baby, I’m not playing some game. If there are rules, I’ll break every one of them to get to you. That’s my promise. I get you in the end. I’ll destroy anything -anyone- that stands in my way.’

No more words. Syllables spoken were useless. He kissed her in a way that left them both breathless. He kissed her to remember. He kissed her to make sure she’d find her way back. He kissed hello, not goodbye.”

About the Book

Allison O’Malley’s plan is to go to grad school so she can get a good job and take care of her schizophrenic mother. She has carefully closed herself off from everything else, including a relationship with Ethan, who she’s been in love with for as long as she can remember.

What is definitely not part of the plan is the return of her long-lost father, who claims he can bring Allison’s mother back from the dark place her mind has gone. Allison doesn’t trust her father, so why would she believe his stories about a long forgotten Irish people, the Tuatha de Danaan? But truths have a way of revealing themselves. Secrets will eventually surface. And Allison must learn to set aside her plan and work with her father if there is even a small chance it could restore her mother’s sanity.

Forgotten ones

My Review

My Rating: 4 Stars

“I felt tears sliding down my cheeks as I listened to Niamh. If this story were true, maybe Liam really could help my mother. For that reason, I wanted it to be true.”

In this fast-paced, relatively short read, the author cleverly brings Irish fairy folklore in to the present day.

All at once, Allison is faced with the prospect of being able to help her mother recover from her mental illness; but in order to do this she must accept that there is a world beyond what we humans know. A dangerous, violent, and beautiful world of fairies: magical beings with little to no regard for human life, and each with their own selfish agenda. In order to save her mother and Ethen, Allison must keep her wits about her in a place where deceit, lies, betrayal, and the possibility of death are at everywhere.

The plot is multi-layered to say the least: there’s a large cast of characters, both human and fey, and many questions to be answered and problems to be solved. Quests are fulfilled and questions are answered in this book, but it is clear that we have only started this journey. And despite all of the danger and intrigue of the fey world, what I really want to know is: What happens with Ethan?! I look forward to a follow-up to this book: spending more time with these characters and getting deeper in to this intriguing story, where the world of the fey collides with our own.

Love Detail’s favorite angel has his sights set on his next target: the stoic and mysterious Noble Blackfeather. And it just may prove to be his toughest case yet. Noble’s reclusive ways keep his angel at wing’s distance, and love even further. But he’s not playing a part – he’s truly masking a painful secret and a profoundly wounded

A cupid’s worst nightmare.

Noble’s been paired with Braelyn Campbell, the cute single mother next door. She’s adorable, friendly, fun…everything Noble needs. This should be a Love Squad slam dunk. Except she’s making a fresh start in Texas to protect her son from a volatile ex, and she’s not about to risk her heart or her son on another man. Even if he’s sexy as sin and always coming to her rescue.

Thank God for possibilities.

But, reluctantly, they are drawn together – thanks to their cupid’s dogged efforts and a whole lotta chemistry. Can the girl next door learn to trust again and help heal Noble’s wounded heart? Together, can they save the lost, hurting boy she’s raising? Can the angels help it happen before it’s too late?

Thank God for love.

Seven Sentences from The Halo Effect

“She nodded again as she took a step in his direction. And though the darkness hid her eyes, he could feel the dare in them taunting him. He didn’t know how to process a woman like her. She studied his face as the rain continued to shower down on them and a peal of lightning lit up the sky with an almost instantaneous crack of thunder. But she didn’t flinch. No words, no touches, nothing. She waited.”

My Review

“But here, he realized, everyone had created a family of sorts. A family of lost souls.”

Truly a joy to read, The Halo Effect broke my heart and put the pieces together again. When Braelyn and Noble meet, it doesn’t seem likely that they will save one another, as well as Braelyn’s son Tristan, from their broken pasts. But with a little intervention from a couple of angels, plenty of natural chemistry, and a bit of faith, this couple just may have a chance at a trust, family, love, and freedom from their pasts.

Smooth writing, clever, natural dialogue, wonderfully layered and relatable characters, burning sexual chemistry, the exact right amount of darkness and angst balanced with humor, and a truly wonderful story all come together in this book. I was so excited when I found out about a second book in The Cupid Chronicles and even more eager to read it when I found out Noble was getting his own book. He was so enigmatic in the first book, I couldn’t wait to find out more about him. His character exceeds my expectations: a sexy loner with a good, if damaged heart. He’s perfectly complimented by the sassy and sexy Braelyn, the protective single mother of Tristan. In a effort to protect their hearts, Noble and Braelyn follow an atypical path for a romance, forming a tentative friendship before a romantic relationship, in spite of their obvious sexual chemistry. Though the path was bumpy, watching the relationship grow among Braelyn, Tristan, and Noble warmed my heart, made me cry, made me laugh, and gave me hope.

This story has the perfect balance of darkness and the light at the end of the tunnel. Even with the “paranormal aspects”, it remains very real and accessible. With emotional, well-paced and exceptional storytelling, a fantastic cast of characters, (both human and angel) and a beautifully satisfying ending, this is a fantastic book that a broad range of romance readers will enjoy.

“She took him in, from his rain-soaked ponytail, to eyes black as the starless night sky, then deeper to the man she knew was underneath. The man who could make her laugh with his dry-as-toast humor. The man full of such quiet spirituality. His sense of honor. His everything. He’d quickly become way too much to her.”

5 Star Book Review: KING HALL by Scarlett Dawn

July 24, 2013 Book Review, Fantasy Romance, New Adult, Paranormal Romance 0

New Release!

King Hall

Title: King Hall

Author: Scarlett Dawn

Publisher: Escape Publishing

Publication Date: August 1, 2013

My Rating: 5 Stars

About the Book

A fresh, meaty, sink-your-teeth-in-and-hold-on-tight new adult fantasy series kicks off with King Hall…

King Hall — where the Mysticals go to learn their craft, get their degrees, and transition into adulthood. And where four new Rulers will rise and meet their destinies.

Lily Ruckler is adept at one thing:  survival.  Born a Mystical hybrid, her mere existence is forbidden, but her nightmare is only about to start. Fluke, happenstance, and a deep personal loss finds Lily deeply entrenched with those who would destroy her simply for existing — The Mystical Kings.  Being named future Queen of the Shifters shoves Lily into the spotlight, making her one of the most visible Mysticals in the world. But with risk comes a certain solace — her burgeoning friendships with the other three Prodigies: a wicked Vampire, a wild-child Mage, and a playboy Elemental. Backed by their faith and trust, Lily begins to relax into her new life.

Then chaos erupts as the fragile peace between Commoners and Mysticals is broken, and suddenly Lily realises the greatest threat was never from within, and her fear takes on a new name: the revolution.

My Review

Action-packed, exciting, fun, sexy, with a dark edge… King Hall is like Sookie Stackhouse, Harry Potter, and something else completely original all rolled into one!

This fast-paced and engaging series debut immediately tosses the reader into the middle of a world much like our own, but with an added population of Shifters, Vampires, Mages, and Elementals. King Hall is about the Mysticals, specifically four very special Mysticals who will eventually be in charge of their entire population. Because of the fast-pace, I found the very first sections of the book slightly confusing as I absorbed so much information about the characters and the added information of the back-stories. For a brief time, it felt like there was a first book in the series that I could have missed (I’m secretly hoping for a prequel!). But overall, the author does a very good job imparting all the necessary information while engaging the reader in the story. And let me tell you, I was hooked.

If it was the compelling plot that drew me in, it was the characters that held me there. Dawn has created a brilliant ensemble cast, each character unique and interesting. On their own they are fantastic characters, but together they are unforgettable. She forges an amazing, emotional, and palpable bond between the group, so much so that as I reader I simply couldn’t imagine them without one another. Though the story belongs to Lily, it is her friends that make her the amazingly strong character that she is.

“Jaw clenched, Ezra took five long strides in my direction and bent down, whispering against my ear, ‘Sweetheart, is today the day you run away alone in fear? Or the day you have the balls to trust in our friendship? Trust in the four of us. Together.’ “

Okay, so here’s my favorite thing about this book: while reading it, I felt a little out of control; and I mean that in a GOOD way. The author’s writing style is incredibly brave. The story is not simply unpredictable, it’s much more than that. No one is safe and nothing is sacred.  It’s like the author gave these characters life, created a world for them to live in, and then let them go, like the story itself has a mind of its own. And then she brings the reader along for the ride. Brilliant.

Though there’s no graphic sex, the book has a constant buzzing sexual undertone. And even though it’s often dark and violent, the despair is equally balanced with a sense of humor. I loved this book, even the cliffhanger ending, which left me eagerly anticipating more of this fantastic story.

About the Book:

POISON (Legacy, #2) By: Molly Cochran

Publisher: Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books

Release Date: December 4th, 2012

Arthurian legend mixes with modern-day witchcraft in this haunting sequel to Legacy, which Publishers Weekly said “should please the legions of paranormal fans looking for a sophisticated supernatural thriller.” After the riveting—and romantic—events of Legacy, Katy has won Peter’s heart and is nowclaiming her place in the magical world. Though half the students at her boarding school come from witching lines, the use of magic is expressly forbidden at Ainsworth, so as to keep the witching world hidden from the blue-blooded preppies, aka Muffies, who also walk the halls.

But the Muffies have at least a notion of magic, because Katy catches them staging a made-up ritual—and to her astonishment, the girls collapse at Katy’s feet and fall into comas. When Katy is blamed, she becomes desperate to clear her name and finds herself battling all odds to harness her growing magical powers in order to save the Muffies and dispel the Darkness once more.

My Review:

My Rating: 4 Stars

A clever mix of legend and contemporary paranormal romance, Poison is an exciting journey in to witchcraft and wizardry, past and present, told through the eyes of an insightful and supernaturally gifted teenage girl.

Filled with a relatable teenage angst, Katy must face issues the issues of average teenagers: who are my real friends? Do I fit in? Am I pretty enough? Where will I go to college? Does my boyfriend really love me? Will I pass chemistry? All while being a witch with a somewhat checkered past and a very uncertain future. She must battle unseen evil, all while those around her doubt her abilities. Love, loyalty, friendships and powers are tested; the lines between good and evil are blurred. Through everything, Katy’s character shows great strength, yet remains vulnerable.

The book has a cast of relatable teenage characters, witches, non-witches, Travelers, and immortals. The characters add substance to a fast-paced, mysterious, and thrilling plot that doesn’t really firm up until the second half of the book. When the pieces fall together and motives and objectives become clear, an epic battle ensues, with Katy at the forefront. With the help of an unlikely ally, Katy has the ability to save an entire realm, though she may not be able to save herself.

In this second installment of the series, Katy and Peter’s love is tested, and though strong, their future is filled with questions. Their romance as well as the story is YA appropriate, but enjoyable for any fans of the supernatural/paranormal genre.

But even this, I thought, even this pain, this failure, was worthwhile. Because I’d tried. I’d done my best, and I would keep trying until the very end, and that meant I was something more than poison. I was a human being- flawed, maybe, wrong, but still a person whose life had been worth living.

‘Forgive me,’ I whispered, knowing that I was worthy of forgiveness. That we all were, no matter what we’d done, and why.

I blinked away my tears. I wasn’t the only one who needed forgiveness. We all had something of the Darkness in us. We all just did what we could.”

About the Book:

Book One in The Dark Hart Chronicles

By: Alexandra Anthony

When personal assistant Savannah Wood lands a dream job with up and coming rock star Nick Hart, it seems too good to be true. He’s devastatingly handsome, reserved and charming…but he has a secret he’s determined to keep.

Their attraction to one another is immediate and Savannah is determined to keep a professional relationship between them. She’s been burned before and has no desire to reopen old wounds.

The lines between professional and personal begin to blur when Savannah finds out Nick’s secret: he’s a century old vampire with a painful past. He’s also hesitant to open himself up to her, yet they find their temptation to one another is stronger than either can resist.

The paparazzi, a string of murders and cryptic, ominous letters threaten their budding relationship. Will their attraction and love be enough to keep them together…or will it tear them apart?

*This is an erotic, romantic book. It contains sexy vampires, graphic language, adult content and situations that aren’t for the faint of heart. Consider yourself warned.*

My Review:

My Rating: 5 Big Stars!

“His voice tapered off and the intensity between us hummed. His fingertips inched closer until they brushed against my wrist softly. The moment our skin met, a jolt of scorching desire darted through me. I’d never had this sort of response to a man’s touch before. It was exhilarating… and equally terrifying.”

And this is only the first touch… it only gets hotter from here.

Here it is: I am utterly, devastatingly, and hopelessly in love (AND LUST!) with Nick Hart. Not only is he a devilishly handsome and sexy rock star, complete with a body to die for, an illuminating smile, wit, charm, and even humility, he is a vampire. A dark, possessive, yet emotionally vulnerable, in touch with his humanity, sexually brilliant vampire. Here’s my incredibly difficult dilemma: he is hopelessly, head-over-heels in love with Savannah Wood; and she is perfect for him. Beautiful, smart, cheeky, with equal parts toughness and vulnerability, and an amazingly easy acceptance of Nick’s dangerous, immortal nature, I certainly don’t stand a chance. A girl can dream right? Oh, and I will…

“His fingers gripped my chin softly, looking me in the eyes. ‘Honestly, I don’t give a shit what anyone thinks. I’m tired of playing around because I want to know every inch of you. And once I know it, I want to learn it all over again. Repeatedly and frequently.’ “

I loved this book. I absolutely can not get enough of Nick and Savannah. I relished in the evolution of their relationship; the initial slow build fraught with electric sexual tension, the first touches, the fantastic first sexual explorations. When Nick’s condition comes to light, it gets much more intense. Extreme emotion and trust come to the forefront as the couple fights to break down their barriers and come to terms with what is quickly becoming undeniable: they love each other and can not live without one another. And through it all, the sex only gets HOTTER! These two are so hot together, and the scenes have so many layers: fantastically erotic, emotionally intense, and unforgettable.

“I could do anything to you like this… you look so fucking beautiful. You’re completely at my mercy.”

Though I was totally engrossed in Nick and Savannah’s consuming relationship, throughout the book there is the undercurrent of an outside threat. Just as the danger is named, the book ends and I realize this story is just beginning, and I am absolutely desperate for more.

“So I’m telling you I love you. And I fucking need you. I want you here with me, Savannah. I don’t want us to be apart. Ever.”

Book Review: ONCE UPON A TWIST by Aimee Duffy and Michelle Smart

June 4, 2013 Book Review, Book Tour, Paranormal Romance 4

Once Upon A Twist

About the Book:

Once Upon a Twist

By: Aimee Duffy & Michelle Smart

Once upon a time in a land far, far away, the creatures are coming…

In a land run by misogynists, where fair maidens are deemed liable to fall in a dead faint at the sight of blood, Prince Charming is worried – the creatures that have destroyed their neighboring kingdoms are coming for them. He judges it imperative to get all the females to safety, but first he needs to break the enchantment enslaving his One True Love to her hateful home. Oh, and there’s the small matter of the Ball to get through too.

But when the creatures reach them ahead of their expected time, all plans are foregone. Can Ella break her wicked stepmother’s enchantment? Can she save her handsome Prince and the kingdom before midnight strikes? And can she show his soldiers what it really means to kick  a monster’s butt? The clock is ticking…

Many, many years later…

When Ruby visits her grandmother in the deep, dark forest, she stumbles into a nightmare. Her grandma’s been attacked by a wolf-like creature, and an ancient disease that turned people into monsters is back… and so is the cold-hearted ex she walked out on a year ago.

Now she has to either accept Jeremy’s help or face becoming a monster herself. Fighting alongside the man she once loved isn’t easy, especially when she discovers there’s more to Jeremy than the cheating bastard she took him for.

As they fight to survive the disease and save those they love, can they keep from falling for each other all over again?

My Review:

My Rating: 4.5 Stars

Two clever, romantic and sexy fairytale re-tellings, each unique and entertaining in its own right; Oh, and ZOMBIES!!! Because I love fairytales and zombie books with kick-ass heroines, this pair of stories is right up my alley!

The first story is a re-telling of Cinderella, written in more of a “classic” fairytale style: complete with castles, a fairy godmother, a pumpkin carriage, and the handsome Prince Charming. And did I mention zombies?!? I just love Ella in this story! Instead of acting the delicate flower this time period requires, she stands up to the men, the knights, and her Prince, and kicks some zombie ass… and this only endears her more to her handsome betrothed.

“No wonder all the women he had met before her had bored him to tears. Marriage to Ella might be a headache but at least it would never be boring.”

The second story, a modern re-telling of Little Red Riding Hood is a bit darker and gorier. Jeremy and Ruby, past loves that still have strong feelings for one another, must fight a zombie-wolf and multiple undead. When tragedy strikes they must confront a dark past and an uncertain future, in order to save each other and have a second chance at love. I love this couple and thoroughly enjoyed their journey back into each other’s arms.

“And he was falling, deeper in love with her, so fast and hard he couldn’t stop it. He knew as heat flooded down his spine and spread through his balls that their next separation would cost him, but he accepted that. This was about her, giving Ruby what she needed. If his heart had to shatter all over again then he’d deal with it. It was no less than he deserved.”

Both sexy stories are packed with intense action and romance (and zombies!)  I highly recommend this two-for-one special on grown-up fairytales.

About Aimee

About me (snooze—can you tell I hate the me stuff? Lol)

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a good book in my hands. In primary school I loved Roald Dahl. In high school my English teacher introduced me to Charles Dickens, Stephen King, Jane Austin, Emily Bronte, and Shakespeare. It was then that I discovered my love for romance and I’ve wanted to pen my own imaginary heroes and heroines for others to enjoy ever since. Only in the last few years was I lucky enough to meet some fabulous and encouraging people to help me gain the skills to make that dream possible.

I live in sunny Scotland in a small town near the Ochils and work nine to five in a solicitors office. In my free time, you’ll find me on Facebook, stalking *cough* following friends on Twitter, and may even catch me shoe shopping.

About Michelle

My love affair with books began as a baby when, according to my mum, I would throw my teddies out of the cot and cuddle my books instead. This love for all things wordy has never left me. I have always been a voracious reader, crossing all genres depending on my mood. Looking back, my first experience with romance was as a child devouring copious amounts of fairy tales.

As my reading tastes evolved, encompassing amongst others Mills & Boon, Jackie Collins and Jilly Cooper, I discovered something special – that a book has the capacity to make my heart beat as if falling in love for the first time.

When not reading or pretending to do the housework, I love nothing more than creating worlds of my own featuring handsome heroes and the sparkly, feisty women who refuse to take crap from them. I hope my books can make my readers’ hearts beat a little faster too.
