Emotionally Compromised

By: A. Rosa

“A smile will get you far, but a smile and a gun will get you farther” -Al Capone.

Federal Agent Alex Turner deals better with guns than boyfriends, and prefers it that way. Her emotional range is bleak, but her aim is damn near perfect.

Thinking saving the world is a far easier task than dating, Agent Turner springs at the opportunity to prevent young scientist Marcus Gibbs from selling his biological weapon to the highest bidder. With her goal in sight, and Marcus eating out of the palm of her hand, an obstacle she doesn’t see coming interferes. Meet Jeremy Hunt — the distractingly handsome CEO of Sunscape Biotechnologies, and Marcus’s boss and best friend.

A man who is accustomed to getting what he wants, Jeremy’s never been one to take no for an answer, which has Agent Turner realizing for the first time that her wit might get her farther than her weapon. With no protocol or training to reference when it comes to matters of the heart, she worries that this might be her hardest assignment yet.

My Review

My Rating: 4.5 Stars

“Relationships are more stressful than saving the world.”

I love romantic suspense, and this book succeeds in perfectly combining the romance and the suspense elements, resulting in a story that is all at once sexy, intense, exciting, and even funny.

Alex and Jeremy come to realize, in their own dysfunctional way, that they are perfect for one another. Their chemistry is absolutely sizzling and it’s impossible not to want them to be together. The complement and challenge one another, and even though they struggle in their budding relationship, there’s not an overwhelming amount of drama. They each manage to be strong when the other is weak, and when it seems they still may not make it, a heart-stopping climax decides their fate. They produce fireworks both in and out of the bedroom, and the small moments of warmth and humor add balance. Their interactions and emotions are genuine and even though the characters are bigger than life (an incredibly sexy CEO and a dangerous and beautiful secret agent), they still feel relatable. I loved both primary characters, but Alex especially: she’s a bad-ass and strong woman, but still a woman with real feelings and struggles with relationships.

The story is filled to the brim with excitement, intrigue, and action. Witty dialogue punctuates the interactions between all of the characters: the cast of secondary characters is well rounded in its own right. The author gives many layers to even the villain of the story feels real and accessible, and I could *almost* feel sorry for him.

This book has spicy romance, well-realized characters, and perfectly paced action and suspense and is a great read for fans of the genre. I hope we get to see more of these characters!

“This is dangerous. He is dangerous. We are dangerous, but I guess I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Excerpt

I try the distraction technique. I press my lips against his, and though he is shocked by the move, he accepts them willingly. His lips devour mine in need.

He slams my body hard into the wall, and pins me with his hips. His hands drag down my torso, gripping my behind roughly, and his fingers dig into my skin.

This is Jeremy Hunt. Commanding and demanding. Another favorite. With this version, I don’t need to think.

He pulls away from me, out of breath. “I need to know we are OK.” I realize this is our way of doing things. Sometimes I suck at talking, and this might be my only way of showing him that we are fine.

His mouth covers mine again, and I can’t help but whimper. He pulls away once more. “That’s better.”

The bastard knows that talking like this isn’t my thing, and he seems aware of his power over me. I return his heated crystal glare with a wry look. Obviously, he’s aware I let him control me. “Fine. Let’s not talk, then.”

He scoops me up, bridal style. “Jeremy, what are you doing?” I yelp in surprise.

“You don’t want to talk. Fine! But I will at least make this more comfortable for both of us.” He beelines for my bedroom.

“I am no good at talking,” I blurt out.

He raises an eyebrow at me, starting up the steps. “Oh really? I think you are good at it when you are scolding me.”

Before I can respond with something sarcastic, he throws me onto the bed. “Jeremy!”

“Oh, are you angry at me now?”

His grin is infectious as I watch his Viking form, in only his boxer briefs, crawl over the bed toward me. My previous anger vanishes, and I smile. How does he do that?

Before I can finish my thought, his lips come down on mine hard, he presses his hips into me, and he grabs my hands, pinning them above my head. His tongue dips into my mouth for a brief moment, teasing me, eliciting an involuntary moan to slip from my lips.

He pulls away looking triumphant. “Now that I’ve got you calmed down, and right where I want you”—his eyes glitter mischievously—”you need to know that I am glad I am everything to you.”

My eyes widen, and the previous panic seeps back into my core. My arms jolt, trying to get free of his grasp, but his grip is firm. I try to speak, but he cuts me off with an authoritative voice. “I am not finished yet.” He places a chaste kiss on my lips to soften the conversation. “We don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to, and I have to admit that would frustrate the hell out of me, but for now I will let it go. I just want to say a few things. Maybe we don’t know what everything means to us, but those feelings are mutual. You don’t need to be scared, or embarrassed by your emotions. I can tell this is something you don’t know how to handle, and in a way, it’s kind of”—he tilts his head to the side as if pondering it for a moment—”cute.”

I furrow my eyebrows at the word cute. Teddy bears are cute, not trained federal agents.

He laughs at my look and kisses the soft skin between my wrinkled brows. “You are so much cuter than you let on, but that is beside the point. You are a lot to handle, you know that?”

My lips twitch playfully, hiding my own secrets.. “Oh, you have no idea.”

We both let out a belt of laughter, and things feel back to normal. Whatever normal means to us.

My Review

“He didn’t care about the past, what complications she presented. She had always belonged to him, and touching her was as necessary as breathing.”

Romantic suspense with an interesting relationship twist, Explosive has danger, intrigue, mystery, romance, and steamy sex. I applaud the author for bravely tackling a tricky menage that isn’t all black and white and threesome sex. The lines are blurred and the waters are muddy, but the emotions are real.

Returning home for his sister’s wedding, Jayce is faced with Alyssa, and the passionate feelings he still has in spite of ten years apart and a mountain of secrets and lies the stands between them. Further complicating the scenario is Alyssa’s relationship with with Jayce’s childhood best friend, Brice. There’s still a chance for Alyssa and Jayce to find common ground, but there is so much standing in their way. I wouldn’t consider Alyssa to be a lovable character, but I could empathize with her somewhat. She has made and continues to make some selfish and stupid decisions. She really seems like a woman that is simply overwhelmed by all of the difficulties surrounding her past and present and this interferes with her ability to get it together and make better decisions concerning her life and her relationships. All of that aside, I did want to see things fall in to place for her and Jayce, and for Brice. Regardless of how the reader may feel about the dynamics of the relationships and potential relationships, the chemistry sizzles and the sex is hot.

I really enjoyed the aspects of the story outside of just the romantic entanglements. The danger and intrigue kept me interested. The book is well-paced, perhaps a tiny bit slow for my personal tastes, certainly not hurried. It speeds up at the right points and slows down to highlight the moments that carry the most impact. Overall, a very good book with a unique romance, and plenty of sex, secrets, lies, and suspense.

My Review

My Rating: 5 Stars!

“She wanted. She wanted so much she couldn’t have. A haven. Raw sex. Understanding. Wildness. She had no idea what this was, if she was really here, if he existed, if there were one or two of her or him. She didn’t think about the interrogation room or Grey Man. Lara simply didn’t care. At this moment, she felt instinctively safe in the arms of the man who claimed her lips with ruthless passion.”

Dark and captivating, with a story and characters that get under your skin, and a reality intermingled with dreams and frightening nightmares, Dangerous Dreams is the start to what is sure to become one of my favorite series. Violence and political intrigue lurk in the shadows of an intense romance forged by an undeniable and mysterious connection between two Dreamrunners, or humans with a special ability to leave their bodies and travel instantly to distant places. Lara does not know that she is special, and Jack must save her from those that will torture and even kill her for her gift.

The story is fast-paced and filled with action and surprising plot twists. The author does an excellent job of weaving important information about the Dreamrunners in to the flow of the story. Facts are revealed in perfect timing with the action, just enough to make sense, but never too much to be overwhelming. The ins and outs of being a Dreamrunner could become complicated or confusing, but it’s a seamless part of the story.

I could not put this book down. Lara and Jack’s mysterious connection is filled with heat and passion, and I was instantly engaged in their story, desperate for them to find and save each other. They offer each other a safe place, a connection the neither have ever had with another person. It is clear that their story is just beginning; that they will need all of the strength that they have shown and more to survive what is to come. I am hopelessly invested in this couple and and desperate to read more of their story and continue the story of The Society, Dreamrunners, and the Lost Ones.

“They would live or they would die, but they would do it together.”

Excerpt

Lara opened her eyes and found herself standing at the foot of a bed with a rust-colored spread. She recognized this place immediately as the room, the one in the photograph they’d shown her. Pain radiated up her right arm to her chest from the last touch of the electrodes, reminding her what would happen if she didn’t obey.

How had she gotten here? Was this yet another dream? A hallucination? All of it looked so real, felt real, like she was really here. Why would they want her to dream about this room?

“You see the window?” someone said to her.

Lara started nervously, the voice rattling her. It sounded as if he was inches from her ear, but when she turned her head to look, no one was there.

She heard another noise, so slight she thought she might have imagined it. She glanced toward the room’s bed.

Someone was watching her. A man.

She cried out in surprise, or tried to, but nothing came out of her mouth. Her voice didn’t exist here.

From a prone position, head on a pillow, he bolted upright to a sitting position. His hand shot toward the nightstand. Lara saw a gun there and shrank back in fear, but when he reached for it, he couldn’t grasp or pick up the firearm.

He tried again, but could not lift it free.

Frustrated, he turned back toward her. He was in the darkest part of the room and she couldn’t make out his features.

“The window,” Grey Man’s disembodied voice hissed in her ear. “Go to the window.”

Lara was in a near fugue state, her mind overwhelmed. She didn’t know where she was. Was she here in this place that seemed so real? Or back in the cell with Grey Man? She didn’t feel right. She didn’t feel real. Panic ignited along her spine, telling her she was about to die. It stripped away any coherent thought.

Please. She didn’t know what she begged for, only that she begged.

“Go. To. The. Window.”

Lara started to obey.

“Stop!” the man on the bed shouted. He leapt to his feet, but didn’t come closer. “Don’t move,” he ordered.

Deep, rumbling, his voice startled her. She froze in place, apparently willing to take orders from anyone now.

“Not a muscle,” the man said. “I’m deadly serious. What you’re doing, you’re not doing it right. You’ve put yourself in danger by coming here like this.”

He took another step forward, edging into the golden light.

It’s him.

The man she’d hallucinated in her bedroom.

He’s real?

Like the first time she’d seen him, he wore jeans and nothing else, the ripple of toned abs on display as he stalked toward her. She’d glimpsed only a little of his face the first time, but she saw the same panther-black hair and granite set to his jaw. Only this time she noticed that one of his cheeks, the left one, wasn’t quite right, the bones slightly out of alignment with the rest of his face. It didn’t look entirely natural. Had he been in an accident? His cheekbone shattered some time in the past?

His dark eyes remained in shadow, refusing to tell her whether or not she could trust him. The glow she’d seen around him in her bedroom was still there, reflecting off his smoothly muscled chest.

Pain shot through Lara. Back in the cell, where they kept her body, Grey Man used the car battery again. Her muscles and joints contracted, convulsed, the fire of electricity burning its way up her arm, reaching for her brain. Her heart stopped. She couldn’t breathe.

“The window, Lara,” Grey Man said. “Or this continues.”

She started toward the rust-colored drapes.

“No!”

The man with black hair vaulted over the bed and suddenly blocked her way. He put a hand up to gesture for her to stop, but didn’t touch her.

“Your body isn’t stable,” he said. “I know you probably don’t know what I’m talking about, but every step you take while you’re like this has the potential to kill you. You can’t touch anything here.”

Though taller than most women, Lara was forced to look up into his face. Their eyes met, and as had happened in her bedroom, recognition clicked. She knew him. She’d found him without ever having known she was looking. He was really there. Standing in front of her.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” he said. “I want to help you.”

Joy soared through her for the briefest fraction of a second.

“An evil man lives in that room,” Grey Man whispered in her ear. “A terrorist. You’re there to find out his location, where he’s hiding.”

All the proceeds from the sale of this book will go to the Lubbock Red Cross.

Release Date: August 19th, 2013

To us, first responders are heroes. But for them, risking their lives is a normal, everyday thing.

Mudflap:

Born the baby of the family, Mudflap has always had something to prove to emerge out of the shadows of his older siblings. He spent eight years as a Special Ops elite sniper and is now a firefighter. But at his heart, he’s just a normal West Texas good old boy who loves his beer, women and football, until the Department of Defense calls him up to say they need his skills again.

Shanae:

Shanae is a first responder of a different sort. She’s a trauma nurse who works on a medical evacuation helicopter team. But while she lives a life full of adrenaline every day, it’s just a cover for her real life, where she hides in the shadows and is secret agent, Shadowfox for the Lubbock Foxtrot Team (LiFT). She’s living the kind of life that most people think exists only in movies and books.

Working for two different branches of the government, Mudflap and Shanae are in a race against time and the terrorists who threaten the very heart of West Texas life, football. They’re working toward the same goal, but find themselves in a confrontation against each other and the lies they’ve each had to hide behind. Can love win out in the end or will the cost be each other and their very lives?

First responders are heroes every day, but this story tells the tale of when they become even more and find love along the way. The key is for them to stay alive so that they can complete their mission and just maybe live happily ever after.

On an ordinary day, they save lives. On an extraordinary day, they save the country.

My Review

My Rating: 5 Stars

I had an absolute blast reading this book, and for several reasons. I’m thrilled to be involved in helping to spread the word about this book: all proceeds and from sale of this book go to the Lubbock Red Cross. AND, the book is just plain fun to read! The story is sexy and exciting, just like it’s lovable hero and heroine. Mystery, humor, and great big dash of Texas charm round out this entertaining read.

There’s multiple layers to this fast-paced and action packed story. There’s romance, intrigue, and a football championship that hangs in the balance. I’m a football fan, so this added a fun angle to the story, but if you’re not, don’t be put off, it doesn’t overwhelm the plot. The plot has tons of twists and turns; I was constantly surprised and kept guessing by this engaging story filled with secret military ops and potential terrorist plots.

I was totally taken in by Mudflap and Shanae’s romance. They are both fantastic characters: funny and bad-ass, both are hard-working first responders, and he’s a military sniper and she’s a secret agent! Together, their chemistry sizzles. Their relationship is hot, fun, flirty, and potentially dangerous for them both. But, this meant to be couple just can’t stay away from each other, and I didn’t want them to.

I highly recommend this fantastic read that has excitement and intrigue, romance and heat. It’s a must read for fans of contemporary romance with elements of suspense, strong heroines, and sweet, sexy, charming alpha-male heroes.

“Brushing a tight kiss across the top of her head, he whispered, ‘Trust me.’

Butterflies danced down her spine at the whisper of his breath on her forehead. Just that slight glance of his lips and she was ready to melt in a puddle at his feet. Even though her highly trained head told her to be on alert, her heart already trusted him completely. Not a good position for a spy to find herself in.”

She took a sip of her wine and looked at him appraisingly. “Okay, now it’s your turn to share. Tell me how in the world you got the name Mudflap. It has to be a nickname, right?”

He chuckled mockingly. “Unfortunately, no. It’s the name that my parents gave me on my birth certificate.”

“Why? And please tell me you’re an only child or that they didn’t do the same thing to your brothers and sisters.”

His eyes sparkled with amusement although he tried to sound annoyed.  “Are you making fun of my name?”

She worked to straighten her grin. “No sir, I would never make fun of a highbrow name like Mudflap.” She giggled. “Come on. You have to tell me the story.”

He sighed deeply before launching into the story. “I have a brother who’s seven years older than me and then twin sisters who are five years older.”

“Ooh, twins run in your family, too. That settles it. We’re never allowed to procreate. We’d end up having a litter,” she teased.

His eyes darkened for a moment as he considered her. A shiver of awareness rolled up her spine, but then he continued. “I wasn’t planned. My mom never forgave my dad for getting her pregnant. To add insult to injury, my dad was out hunting when mom went into labor. I’m not sure what the story is, but mom swears the night I was conceived dad was so horny, he got turned on by a mudflap girl. Obviously, that’s not even possible, but I honestly don’t really want to know what the whole story is. All I know is that mom was hormonal and ticked at dad and I paid for it with my name. She’s since forgiven me for being born, but I’m stuck with the name.”

Shanae snickered. “That is so wrong.” But her lips continued to twitch.

“Tell me about it. I’m the one who’s had to live with the name my whole life.”

“Have you ever considered changing it?”

“Yeah, it’s crossed my mind a time or two or hell, one hundred times, but I figure it’s a good reminder to always use birth control.”

She full-out guffawed at that. “Oh my God.” The snorting continued. “That’s absolutely priceless.” She giggled into her hand.

“Oh yeah, just continue to laugh it up. I see how you are.”

“I’m sorry, but it really is a great story.”

Book Review: JACK STONE- WILD JUSTICE (The Dark Master Series #1) by Vivien Sparx

JackStone Wild Justice

Title: Jack Stone- Wild Justice (Dark Master Series #1)

Author: Vivien Sparx

Publication Date: June 28, 2013

My Rating: 4 Stars

About the Book

Jack Stone is the Dark Master.
A tough man. A hard man – and he is sexy as all hell.
When Jack Stone arrives in the small town of Windswept, Arizona all he wants is answers. What he finds is a sexy woman with a lust for BDSM and a secret the locals will kill to keep.

My Review

A take no prisoners story with a take no prisoners hero. Jack Stone is on a mission. His sister disappeared and he has made it his sole purpose in life to find her. He suspects she has been kidnapped and is tracked in the underground world of sex slave trafficking. His quest for his sister leads him to Windswept, Arizona, a nowhere town where Jack suspect trafficking activity goes on. He blows into town and determined to get to the bottom of things, and potentially rescue two more kidnapped girls.

Fast paced, violent, exciting, and shamelessly sexy, I was glued to the pages of Wild Justice, needing to know what happened next. Jack Stone is a sexy force to be reckoned with, both in and out of the bedroom. He forges an unlikely partnership with local diner owner Lilley Pond, and their chemistry heats up the pages. She also shows herself to be an essential ally when Jack needs it the most.

The story itself is engaging and action packed, and I couldn’t wait to find if and how Jack would save the day, solve the mystery, and rescue the kidnapped girls. When his time in Windswept is over, the strong, solitary Jack Stone leaves the way he came, and leaves the reader wanting more of Jack and his quest for justice.

“She had never known a man like this, he filled her with a sense of awe. It was not only the physical strength of him, nor was it the steady confidence of him. She broke the kiss at last, her eyes wide and fathomless as she explored the the details of his face from the hard, uncompromising jaw line, to the tiny creases and marks of life that had chiseled into features around his eyes and the corners of his mouth that all seemed to heighten the effect of power an strength and determination; the face of a man who lived by his own rules, dictated his own terms to life.”

Danger once again laps at the shores of Barkley Sound, the Graveyard of the Pacific…

Since her rocky childhood and its abrupt, brutal ending, schoolteacher Anna Silver hasn’t given her trust easily. But when her estranged father gets in over his head—again—and winds up dead, his last message to Anna is as clear as it is insistent: she’s in danger and Brent Carver, the man with whom he shared a prison cell for five years, is the only person she should turn to for help. With nowhere else to go and with her father’s killer on her trail, Anna flees to what she hopes is safety.

Tucked into the west coast of Vancouver Island, Brent Carver’s isolated home hasn’t seen many visitors. And his friend’s daughter is the last person he ever expected to grace his doorstep. She’s in trouble, and he can’t deny her protection…just as he can’t deny his attraction to the independent beauty. “He watched Anna watching his ocean. Watched her as she slowly absorbed the rhythm of the waves against the shore. All the anger and resentment fell away from him. Peace fell over her features and he knew, with gut-wrenching certainty, that he’d do anything to keep it there.”

A fantastic read for fans of romantic suspense and books with broken heroes and heroines, Dark Waters strikes the perfect balance between romance and page-turning mystery.

So I’m a little (okay a lot) in love with Brent. I can’t help it. Not only is he movie star sexy, broken and dark, but his loyalty to Davis and his protective streak are what really drew me in. He didn’t ask for Anna to show up at his door, but when she does, he agrees to help her. Even when her own difficult side shows, his loyalty to her father, as well as his growing attraction for Anna keep him set on his task to save her at all costs, and to clear her father’s name in the process. Anna has her own difficult past, and like Brent, trusts no one. I enjoyed watching their relationship, begun only of necessity, grow from an undeniable spark of chemistry, to something much more, something that could save them both.

The plot of the book is twisty and turny, with plenty of page-turning action. The reader is offered glimpses in to the mind of Rand, a man that will stop at nothing to find Anna and kill her, as she has unwittingly become a threat to his future. Having the perspective of Anna’s pursuer adds another interesting layer of intrigue to the story.

An engaging and past-paced storyline, smooth writing style, well-crafted and intriguing characters, and a romance that offers both sizzle and healing make this a truly enjoyable read.

Excerpt

Brent Carver lay in bed listening to the surf outside his open window. The rhythmic pounding pulse helped calm the ragged unsettled feeling that clawed inside him. Sometimes it even let him sleep. Not tonight.

He shifted restlessly, sweat damp on his skin. The west coast was getting a blistering-hot summer that had him thanking God he wasn’t stuck in that shithole prison, sweating it out with a few hundred of his least best friends. He sat up in bed and swiped irritably at his too long hair.

Gina had liked it long.

Damn.

He’d spent the past year trying not to think about Gina, or her murder, and yet memories snuck past his guard all the time. Her smile, her giving nature, her unwavering dedication to his undeserving ass. When he’d broken things off with her, he’d hoped she’d finally move on. Find herself a man she could marry and have babies she could spoil. But things hadn’t worked out that way, and no one regretted it more than he did.

He whipped back the covers and padded naked to the open window that faced the Pacific. It took a moment for his heartbeat to stop hammering. A moment for the burn in his chest to ease. At nearly forty years old, he’d spent half his life in prison and would never get enough of breathing in the fresh clean air of freedom.

The dark water before him stretched like a smooth satin sheet all the way to the horizon. But the calm tranquility was an illusion that disguised deceptive currents and gigantic swells, cold depths and wicked storm surges.

That ocean called to him—it always had. This sliver of coast was what he’d missed locked up in his cell for so many years. Not peace. Not serenity. Not pissing in a private bathroom. Huge rollers crashing home. Elements clashing like titans in his backyard. The abandon. The wildness. The energy. Prison had squeezed the need for that energy into a tiny corner of his mind and tortured him with it in his dreams. When he’d gotten out, he’d spent two days just staring at the ocean. This was where he belonged. This was where he needed to be. And no one was ever going to take it from him again. Being caged, being imprisoned, had almost wiped him out of existence, and the worst thing was—it was his own damn fault. He’d taken a life and gotten what he deserved.

He’d been out four years now, but the smells, the memories, the sense of watching his back, was ingrained, tattooed on his brain like most cons wore ink. He’d found his salvation in a talent for painting, enough of a talent that he could afford a kick-ass mansion anywhere in the world. But he’d returned here, to the small remote strip of land on the western edge of Vancouver Island. The scene of the crime and the only home he’d ever known.

Maybe he should buy a yacht, learn to sail. But that sort of aimless wandering didn’t appeal and his parole officer probably wouldn’t approve either. He rubbed his aching neck muscles and headed downstairs for a drink. He’d finish that last piece for the exhibition.

Exhibition.

He shook his head in disbelief. Some fancy-schmancy museum in New York was giving him an exhibition. He opened the fridge and pulled out a beer and popped the top. His agent had worked some serious magic, wrangling that mother. Only trouble was the gallery wanted the elusive and mysterious B.C. Wilkinson to turn up in person to the opening. His agent had even taken care of a passport and special visa requirements.

Yeah, right. He snorted. No fucking way. Still, Brent had learned years ago that it was easier to do what he wanted and beg forgiveness later. Not that he dealt much in forgiveness. Gina’s image smiled sweetly inside his head, but she was dead—stabbed to death by a homicidal maniac last year—and thinking about her wouldn’t bring her back.

His fist tightened around the neck of the bottle and he resisted the urge to hurl it at the wall. Prison had taught him iron control—he just hadn’t realized how much he’d need it on the outside. He headed onto his back porch, buck naked and glad of the fresh ocean breeze that cooled his overheated body. His nearest neighbor lived a quarter of a mile away, out of sight, over the bluff. This region was too remote for passersby and anyone with a boat would moor it in a sheltered cove, not at the mercy of Barkley Sound’s treacherous grasp. The moon was cloaked behind restless clouds that billowed like smoke across the sky. He was just about to sit his ass down when he saw a shadow flitter near the woods.

He had visitors?

No fucking way.

In prison he’d received enough death threats to take serious precautions with his safety. When some of the local thugs had been arrested last year, he’d let down his guard and thought the danger was over. He’d obviously thought wrong. What if it was his brother, Finn? Or the cops? He pressed his lips together. Finn knew better than to spook him and the cops had no reason to be sniffing around.

Something was going on.

No one made social calls on Brent Carver—no one without a death wish. He lived on a peninsula that, due to the rugged terrain, was only accessible by boat. There were about thirty locals living on this side of the inlet, but they were more likely to hand-feed rabid wolves than drop in for a beer.

Did his visitor know he was out here?

Leaving the bottle on the deck, he carefully slipped over the side of the porch and melted into the night. It was pitch-black in the woods, but he’d grown up here and knew every tree and hollow. He made his way along the side of the shed and ducked into the forest. Over the last year, he’d gradually stopped listening to the scanner for signs of trouble, stopped keeping firearms in the house. He’d gotten soft, but not stupid. Silently he dropped to his knees beside a massive Sitka spruce that was technically on his neighbor’s property. If she found out about his little cache, she’d be pissed. He swept dirt and dead needles off the top of a waterproof box he’d sunk into the ground, and removed his SIG Sauer. He replaced the lid and covered it as best he could in the dark. He got his bearings, and found the tree where he’d hidden his ammo. He grabbed a magazine and headed up to the road, circling around. He inched down an old trail and came up behind where the shadow had been.

Darkness cloaked the clearing where his house sat but his night vision was sharp. And damned if the woman—put a man in prison long enough and he could spot a female blindfolded at twenty paces—wasn’t climbing his porch steps shining her flashlight around the place like a laser show. Maybe she was a thief? Maybe someone had figured out Brent Carver was B.C. Wilkinson and sitting on a shedload of very expensive artwork? Then she knocked on his back door.

What the…?

He rubbed his hand over his brow. He was stark naked except for his gun, and now some woman was standing on his deck? He hoped to hell she wasn’t a Jehovah’s Witness because she was about to have acome-to-Jesus moment.

But she could still be armed and dangerous. He’d pissed off enough bad guys in the joint to be wary of anyone turning up in the middle of the night. Hell, no one visited here, period.

“Hello?” She pressed her ear to his door. “Mr. Carver?” she said louder. Her shoulders sagged when no one answered.

He didn’t recognize her voice. He moved fast and silent across the clearing, padded up the stairs just as she reached for the doorknob.

“You’re trespassing.”

She jolted, her hand going to her heart as she spun to face him. “Oh, my God. You scared me.”

Never admit fear.

“I don’t like visitors, lady.”

Her flashlight dipped and then shot back to his face, almost blinding him. She swallowed, taking in his lack of clothes and keeping her eyes north of the hot spots. “You’re naked.”

“I was in bed.” He didn’t know why he needed to explain himself.

Her voice came out like gravel. “I’m looking for Brent Carver.”

“I’m looking for peace and quiet. Looks like we’re both screwed.”

“You’re Brent?” Her free hand slipped into her bag and he grabbed her wrist and pinned her against his door before she could get the drop on him. She went ballistic and tried to whack him with the flashlight. He jerked it out of her fingers and threw it behind them. She felt tiny and delicate, crushed between him and that solid piece of oak, although her lungs were in full working order.

Shit, his ears hurt.

“No one will hear you, so you might as well stow it.” She jammed one hand against his chin, squirming like an eel, then went for gold by trying to knee him in the nuts. He deflected the attack and pressed her tighter against the door, wedging her there with his body. She barely came up to his chin but fought like a wild thing. “Want to tell me who you are and why you’re knocking on my door in the middle of the night?” He concentrated on making sure he didn’t injure her while he tried to check out what she was going for in her purse.

She scratched sharp fingernails down his arm, drew in a breath to scream even louder. Her breasts pushed against his chest, which would have worked for him in a big way if she wasn’t so goddamn terrified. Sonofa-fucking-bitch.

Why me?

He had nowhere to stick his gun so he removed the pocketbook from her fingers and stepped back, keeping a wary eye on her bloodthirsty knee. She stood there stunned, trembling, and breathing heavily. He didn’t think it had anything to do with his dazzling good looks.

“You bastard.” Her chin snapped up. “You aren’t Brent Carver.”

He cocked a brow. “What makes you say that?” He searched her bag, more by touch than sight in the darkness. A cell phone, wallet, keys, tampons, tissues. No gun or shank.

“He’s a respectable painter. He’s not some nutcase who runs about in the middle of the night, waving around a gun, among other things,” she muttered darkly. “Attacking innocent, defenseless women.”

The scratches on his arm stung enough for him to snort out a laugh at that. Her eyes narrowed. He watched moonlight flow over her features, fine boned and delicate, except for the tight clench of her jaw.

There was no obvious threat in her pocketbook, but it didn’t mean he should let his guard down. He needed clothes. For some crazy reason, he was getting a little turned on by Miss Prim and Proper telling him who and what he was. It was probably being naked and within a hundred yards of anything two legged and female, but he didn’t want to scare her any more than he had already. He wasn’t a hound. Nor was he under any illusion about what she thought might happen when he grabbed her. Someone had jumped him in the shower once and lost their eye for the trouble. Hell, most people thought he was evil incarnate and that was the way he liked it. He reached past her and opened the door. “Inside. Now.”

“I’m not going anywhere with you.” She tried to dodge aside.

He grabbed her by the shoulders and forced her across his threshold. “You want to meet Brent? I’ll take you to him.” Her eyes were so huge with fear she looked like she’d been electrocuted. But she’d come to him, she had to play by his rules.

Title: Indivisible Line

Author: Lorenz Font

Publisher: Renaissance Romance Publishing

Publication Date: July 16, 2013

About the Book

Pre-med student Sarah Jones is back in Beaver, Alaska, for summer vacation.  A loyal member of the Gwich’in tribe, she accepts the rules set by her father, the leader of their small town. Raised in a strict household, she learned early on to do what is expected of her and has agreed to an arranged marriage. Despite her reluctance to marry without love, Sarah is unwilling to defy her father’s wishes. She hopes to help usher in an era of independence and stability for the town, but for now, her focus is finishing med school so she can become Beaver’s resident doctor.

Business owner Greg Andrews wants to escape his philandering wife and his life in general. Leaving New York City to join a hunting expedition in Alaska, Greg’s plans are turned upside down when he is shot on Gwich’in land and ends up on Sarah’s operating table. In the absence of a qualified doctor, Sarah must operate to save his life. She refuses to wait for the consent of their tribal leader, and her father banishes her from the tribal land in punishment.

Grateful for his life, Greg concocts a scheme to help. Plagued by the side effects of her unconventional operation, he convinces Sarah to become his live-in nurse. Without the means to support herself, Sarah agrees to the questionable arrangement, but she soon finds herself in even more trouble. Her new problem is that she is falling in love with this infuriating man, and the choices she now must make are must more difficult than the simple act of saving a man’s life.

Together, Sarah and Greg must both decide whether they can overcome the vast differences between them, or if the indivisible line that separates their worlds will ultimately pull them apart.

My Review

My Rating: 4 Stars

Can two people from completely different worlds, each with their own host of problems and baggage, find enough common ground to build a relationship?

It seems impossible, but Sarah and Greg attempt to just that. In the midst of action and life threatening intrigue, emotional turmoil, and life-altering events, a very unlikely romance begins to simmer. The romance has an improbable start: a murder attempt followed by a kidnapping, events which left me questioning where this story could actually go. However, I was rewarded with a journey that made me forget the story’s questionable beginnings, and focus on the genuine connection between the characters. The author is able to create a very real romance between two very flawed characters, but something about it just works. They struggle throughout the story to overcome their individual circumstances and find common ground; I wanted them to work, to find peace, redemption, and happiness. All odds are stacked against them, and unforseen tragic events threaten to derail them at every turn, but still they fight, for themselves and for each other.

I enjoyed this thoughtful, emotional journey with its multi-layered plot and characters, surprising twists and turns, action and angst, and ultimately, its beautifully bittersweet conclusion.

“This was how she imagined love to be; sharing with the man you love. The truth startled her, but now she knew deep inside that it had been the driving force behind everything she’d felt from the moment she’d first met Greg. This was all she’d ever wanted; something close to a fairytale.”

She blinked and pulled her hand back. “I hate nightmares.”

Sarah scrambled to sit up while Greg rose from his kneeling position at the side of her bed.

“I heard your screams, so I came in to check on you.” He watched her with a worried expression. “What got you all scared?”

She tried to remember but came up empty. “How can dreams turn you upside-down, and then leave you wondering what got you all riled up in the first place?” Blinking, she tried to compose her thoughts. “I can’t remember.”

“Do you want a glass of water?” Greg asked without moving from his spot.

Sarah shook her head and shivered, still feeling the effects of the forgotten nightmare. “Lie down with me?”

Why did she always end up speaking without thinking first? This was so wrong on all levels, but she was giving in to her heart’s desire. If it was a mistake, then she’d learn her lesson pretty soon.

Greg hesitated. She couldn’t blame him. He must know how she felt about him, although, she’d fought hard to keep her emotions hidden. Greg was far too beautiful for his own good, and she had been mesmerized by him from the first moment she’d laid eyes on him.

She closed her eyes, waiting for him to turn her down. He didn’t say anything, but then she felt the mattress dip under his weight. “I’ll hold you until you fall asleep.”

Sarah nodded, and then turned her body in his direction. Greg eased himself onto the bed, and face to face, they stared at each other in the darkness. No words were necessary. They were just two people struggling with their lives and everything around them, and they needed each other.

My Review:

My Rating: 3.5 Stars

Death of a Waterfall is a good start to what I think will be a very compelling series.

The plotline is compelling: twisty and turny with plenty of suspense. It unravels smoothly if a bit slowly; as the pieces came together, I was completely drawn in. I had to keep turning the pages to find out what would happen next with Teghan, Donnie, and their group of friends.

Unfortunately, though it isn’t a deal-breaker, I just couldn’t form a strong emotional connection with these characters.  There is chemistry between Teghan and Donnie, but something is missing. The only character I was able to really feel anything for was Teghan’s father, Rob. His absolutely horrible actions made me hate him with a fiery passion. Towards the end of the book, as we really get in to the story, there are some very intense moments that I should have felt more strongly about, but just didn’t.

The verdict: this is a solid start to a series. The reader is introduced to the characters and the groundwork is laid for what has the potential to be a very thrilling and intriguing new series. The pieces are all there, and perhaps they will fit together more solidly in the next book.  Am I attached to these characters? Not really. Would I read the next book in the series to find out what happens next? Absolutely.

“‘I’d do anything for you, Teghan. Don’t ever forget that.” He brought her mouth to him and kissed her softly. In that moment, he vowed to do anything and everything in his power to show her just how far he was willing to go for her.”

She looked at him, at the remorse in his eyes, at the bruises on his face, and at the sadness pulling on his lips. Teghan tossed her clothes and makeup to the floor. Taking his face into her hands, she gently kissed his bruised cheek before making her way to his mouth. Her kiss was soft at first, and then became harder, demanding. It was a greedy kiss, ripe with passion that left her hungry for more. She kept her lips on his as she adjusted her position on his lap and straddled him.

“Teghan.” He groaned with pleasure as he began to work the buttons on her blouse.

Her breath hitched when he guided her shirt from her shoulders. He wrapped one arm around her waist, holding her on his lap as he fumbled to unhook her bra with one hand. “Here.” Teghan reached behind her back. “Let me help.” Donnie cupped her breast in his hand before taking it into his mouth. His tongue raked over her nipple, coaxing it into a tight, hard peak. Teghan arched toward him, her head falling to her shoulders. The feel of his hot mouth on her lit a fire deep in her that raged with each flick of his tongue. She ran her fingers through his hair and held him to her. She bit her bottom lip. “Mmmm,” she moaned. God, why hadn’t she let this happen sooner?

Book Tour and #Review: MAFIA SECRET by Angie Derek

May 7, 2013 Book Review, Book Tour, Romantic Suspense 7

Mafia Banner

Welcome to the Mafia Secret Book Tour! Read an excerpt from the book as well as my review!

About the Book:

Lessa Noelle grew up never knowing she was the illegitimate daughter of a mafia king pin. After his murder, she finds herself a surprise heiress immersed in the dangerous world of organized crime with only the guidance of Marco Santo her father’s second in command to help her.

Marco searches for her father’s killer and tries to keep the realities of his life from touching her. An uneasy attraction blossoms between the two. An already dangerous situation turns volatile when a killer turns his attention to Lessa.

Excerpt:

He held a white envelope against the glass and spoke again. “I have a letter from your father.”

She relaxed a smidge. He had the wrong person. Her father had died when she was six. But she couldn’t completely relax. He was still a stranger, and after this afternoon . . . . Whoever had tried to run her over still hadn’t been caught. And maybe she’d heard him wrong. Her car was running and the windows were shut.

She took her left hand off the steering wheel and cracked her window a quarter of an inch so she could hear him better. “I’m sorry, what did you say?”

“I have a letter from your father.”

“I think you have the wrong person.”

“Alessandra Noelle?”

Lessa hesitated, her right hand tightening on the steering wheel. “Yes.”

“You’re the correct person.” His voice was low and soothing.

But it had the opposite effect on her nerves. She shook her head. “I can’t be. My father died nearly twenty years ago.”

He hesitated this time and she focused on his face. The security light cast him in harsh shadows. He wore a dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a tie. No suit jacket. Probably a concession to the heat. His dark hair was brushed back off his face and his eyes appeared as dark in the night.

His lips firmed into a frown before he spoke again. “No, he didn’t. He died two days ago.”

My Review:

My Rating: 4 Stars

With it’s nearly non-stop action, gritty mafia plot line, twists and turns, and steamy romance, Mafia Secret grabbed me from the first page.

When Lessa learns that she is the illegitimate child of a recent murdered patriarch of a powerful crime family, her life, and the family’s life is thrown into turmoil. Loyalties are tested and so is Lessa’s mettle as she begins to come to terms with her new life, with the help of sexy Marc, her guard and an upper-level player in the family.

The plot has everything expected from one centering around a mob family, opulent wealth, questionable business dealings, action, and intrigue. What I enjoyed in particular about this story is the family dynamic. The author provides a colorful cast of characters in the Tazio family. The are real, well developed characters that add an interesting dynamic to the story.

At the center of the story is the undeniable chemistry between Lessa and Marc.  He struggles to balance his loyalty to the family, his search for the murderer of Lessa’s father, and his growing attraction for the beautiful blonde cheerleader. He learns that his need to protect her goes beyond family duty and fortunately she feels the connection as well. The result is steamy sex and a satisfying romance. Their romance is a welcome addition to this multi-layered and exciting story, complete with a pulse-pounding climax and a happily ever after.

“As he picked her up and carried her to the bed, she raised her arms and cupped his face with her hands. Drawing him closer, she captured his lips with hers. He returned her kiss, gently at first and then with increasing passion. Tomorrow was soon enough to worry about what came next. For tonight, there was nowhere she’d rather be.”

My Review:

My Rating: 4 Stars

A very enjoyable romantic suspense that has action, intrigue, heat, and an interesting paranormal twist, Finding Trust is a solid series debut.

Because I’m an equine professional myself, I personally found the story very compelling, as it centers around a young, female equine veterinarian. The author takes the very real situation of the deadly Hendra virus and expands it into an exciting bioterrorism plot, complete with a secret team of agents that have some extra “special” qualities to fight a potential global disaster. Though the book reads a little slow in the very beginning, once the story gets rolling it is sexy, action-packed, and nearly impossible to put down.

Gayle takes the time allow Rihanna and Brayden, our lead couple, to establish a strong chemistry and connection. They build on an initial attraction until it boils over into some steamy sex, made super hot by the fact that the author has painted an absolutely gorgeous picture of Brayden in the reader’s mind. Protective, extra strong, sexy, and confident work for me 🙂 I like Rhianna’s character very much: no-nonense, tough with just enough vulnerability, and refuses to play the damsel in distress card. The author has also given this well-matched couple a great supporting cast that we hopefully get to know better in future books in the series.

Overall, this is an entertaining read with an intriguing plot and very good group of characters. The story ends on a cliffhanger, leaving the door open for more books in a very promising series.

I recently discovered those school vocational assessments are really interesting and probably correct! Who would have thought, hey? You see, I clearly remember taking one of those in Year 11 (for my US friends, I think that equates to junior year in high school). Anyway, semantics. Well, the results came back indicating that I should pursue a career in writing and something else. What that something else was I can’t remember but the writing thing stuck in my mind. Sure, I’d always liked English and had already developed a ravenous appetite for romance novels by the age of sixteen—but who becomes a writer straight out of school? So to cut a long story short, I went to Uni and studied Business and ended up managing large-scale IT projects shortly after. I can’t complain: it’s been a great career. I’ve done some awesome projects and met some incredible people and I won’t be giving it up anytime soon. Anyway, I’ve messed around with a couple of “secret” novels over the years and I finally decided to get serious and finish one. Hence “Finding Trust” came about. And about twenty years later, I’ve finally proved a vocational assessment correct, because I love writing! As to some other stuff about me: I live on the Gold Coast, Australia. I love spending time with my family and friends. When I’m not sitting behind a screen playing with IT or writing, you might find me down the beach playing in the waves on a Jet Ski or a bogey board (both are uber cool). When the weather turns a bit cooler (doesn’t really happen on the Gold Coast), we like to head for the snow. I’ve discovered I have two kids who are kamikaze skiers—they must take after their father. He’s always at me to “release the handbrake.” Apparently I’d ski so much better. I call it a healthy understanding of self-preservation and gravity! I like to think I can fit in a few workouts and martial arts classes each week. This tends to be a figment of my imagination more than reality, unfortunately. I am trying to remedy this, but those damn characters just keep demanding to have their stories told and, well, there’s always another good book to read! I hope you enjoy mine. Please drop me a line. I’m active on Facebook, Twitter, and via email Natalie@nataliegayle.com.au. I’d love to know what you think of my books and well, let’s be truthful—I love talking about books, whether they’re mine or someone else’s. Fiction is just so much more fun than reality!!! Happy Reading.
