Book Tour, Review, and Giveaway: JUST THE MESSENGER by Ninette Swann

April 10, 2013 Book Review, Book Tour, Erotica, Past Giveaways, Romantic Suspense 6

Welcome to the Just the Messenger Book Tour! Today I am sharing my review and the chance to win a $25 Amazon Gift Card and one of three ebook copies of the book!

About the Book:

When Graciela Merced fumbles a package she’s delivering for her mysterious and sexy boss, Gene Hardy, she finds out he’s more than just a wealthy photographer. Prepared to lose her job, she confronts him…and ends up embroiled in the tricky takedown of a powerful drug cartel pushing cocaine into the heart of New York City.
Marco Valencia is an undercover agent, working against time—and against Gene Hardy—to crack Angel’s Drug Cartel before the story makes it to the press. When Hardy’s luscious Venezuelan messenger literally falls at his feet, he has no idea just how well he’ll get to know the beauty or how difficult it will be to drop her.
Hardened by experience, Gene Hardy takes his undercover work seriously, and charges a hefty price. When Grace makes a careless mistake and hurls him back into the visage of Marco Valencia, he must either fire her, or involve her in a twisted plot that could kill them all.
As the two men battle over their feelings for Graciela—and their attraction to each other—one thing becomes perfectly clear.
Grace is much more than just the messenger.

My Review:

My Rating: 4 Stars

“An IIB agent bent on righting wrongs and doing whatever it took to save the entire world, and a hardened, cynical businessman who would do what was right or what was wrong for a price? Did they have the capacity to love? Is that even what she wanted from them?”

Just the Messenger is action-packed, smokin’ hot, and suprisingly sweet.

Swann succeeds in combining the intrigue of government agents and international drug cartels with an unlikely romance. The story is engaging and fast-moving, with non-stop action. There are twists, turns, surprises, a few brushes with death, and a super steamy threesome.

Grace, Gene, and Marco compliment each other well. The men are opposite ends of the spectrum, each with their own appeal. Grace, though a bit naive, is tougher than I would have expected, and quite the vixen besides. Whether in pairs or all together, they have great chemistry and the sex scenes are HOT.

I enjoyed this entertaining thrill ride. The action (in and out of the bedroom) kept my pulse racing and my palms sweaty, and the romantic ending left me with a smile.

“Her mind was screaming for answers, but she shut it off, choosing instead to listen to her body, which was screaming for the touches of the two men she’d fantasized about for weeks. She reached one arm around Marco’s thick neck, pulling him up to her for a searing, wrenching kiss. Her other arm wound its way back around Gene’s waist, pulling him against her again…”

Book Tour, Review, and Giveaway: IDENTITY CRISIS by Eliza Daly

April 3, 2013 Book Review, Book Tour, Past Giveaways, Romantic Suspense 7

Welcome to the Identity Crisis by Eliza Daly Book Tour! Today I have my review, an excerpt, and a chance to win a $20 Amazon or Barnes and Noble Gift Card!

About the Book:

Title: Identity Crisis

Author: Eliza Daly

When Olivia Doyle’s father dies under suspicious circumstances, rather than inheriting a family fortune, she inherits a new identity. She learns they were placed in the Federal Witness Protection Program when she was five years old. Her father was involved in an art forgery ring and testified against the mob. Brought up not to trust anyone, Olivia has a difficult time relying on U.S. Marshal Ethan Ryder to protect her, and to keep her secret. She fears her father may have continued his life of crime through her art gallery. She has little choice but to depend on Ethan when she realizes someone is now after her. Olivia’s search for the truth leads her and Ethan across country to a family and past she doesn’t remember.

At the age of ten, Ethan witnessed a brutal murder. He vowed when he grew up, he’d protect people in danger. Protecting Olivia is difficult when she won’t trust him. He soon realizes his desire to protect her goes beyond doing his job, but if his judgment becomes clouded by emotions, her safety could be jeopardized.

Can Ethan and Olivia learn to trust each other when they uncover secrets that will change their lives forever?

My Review:

My Rating: 4 Stars

Not just a romance, this book has action and intrigue, centering around the world of underground art forgeries and mob connections. The story’s twists and turns kept me glued to the pages. Though it has a very different plot line, with it’s sexual tension, art forgeries, and exciting game of cat and mouse I was reminded of The Thomas Crowne Affair.

I enjoyed Ethan and Olivia’s romance. Along with sizzling sexual tension, they share the emotional scars that come with the early, tragic loss of family. There is a connection, an understanding: I was rooting for them the entire time. Not just their romance, but the chance at trust, healing, redemption, and a future involving love and family.

The romantic elements, and a plot providing plenty of action and mystery (I was completely surprised when the mystery was finally solved!) make this a very good read.

“She wrapped her arms around his neck, tunneling her fingers through his wet hair. The thought of ever being away from Ethan again increased the urgency of their kiss. She longed for their bodies and lips to remain fused forever, except she had something she needed to tell him.”

Father Clifford slipped a yellowed envelope from the side pocket of his vestment. “Your father gave this to me many years ago. Asked that I give it to you upon his death.”

She took the envelope from his hand. The organ music faded and a desolate, eerie stillness fell over the church, raising the hairs on the back of her neck. She tightened the shawl around her shoulders. She opened the envelope to find a letter and a newspaper clipping. She started with the letter.

Dear Livvy,

First, know that I loved you more than anything in this world. That’s why I hope someday you’ll forgive me for what I’ve done. Telling you the truth while I was alive could have put your life in danger. Now that I’m gone, I no longer fear for your safety. They would only have hurt you to get to me.

The only way to keep us safe was to enter the Witness Protection Program when you were five. Leaving our friends and family was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I can’t stand the thought of you now being alone. I hope you’ll go back to our family, in the town where I grew up, Five Lakes, Wisconsin. I’d like to be laid to rest there, next to your mother. Please forgive me enough to grant me this one last wish. If you should ever encounter any problems, contact Roy Howard, the U.S. Marshal who relocated us, at 415-334-9076. I’m so sorry. Please believe you were the most important thing to me. You were my life. My Livvy.

Love, Dad

Olivia stood paralyzed, her mind racing, trying to comprehend the letter. Was this some kind of sick joke? For the past twenty-four years her dad had lived in fear that somebody would hurt them? What had forced him to leave behind everyone he’d loved? Everyone she’d probably loved, but obviously couldn’t remember. And if her mom wasn’t buried in San Francisco, whose grave had Olivia been visiting here all these years? She tried to hold the letter steady in her trembling hands. Of course it was vague. Her dad had been a man of few words. However, these few words expressed a lot of emotion, something he’d never been good at doing.

“Is everything all right?” Father Clifford’s voice penetrated her thoughts.

Concern creased the older man’s brow and from the curiosity filling his gray eyes, he had no clue what the envelope contained. Her dad hadn’t even trusted a priest with his secret. Her dad had been the only person she’d ever really trusted, and it turned out she hadn’t truly known him.

She merely nodded, unable to find her voice. She inhaled a deep breath. The scent of beeswax candles and incense did little to calm the panic racing through her veins. She unfolded a clipping from a Chicago newspaper, dated twenty-four years ago. The headline read Art Dealer in Bed with Mob Blows Whistle on Forgery Ring and Vinnie Carlucci. The article included a photo of police officers escorting her dad. She started reading the article. Prominent Chicago art dealer Andrew Donovan confesses to having sold more than a hundred forgeries

Her stomach dropped. She slapped a hand over her mouth, certain she was about to vomit right there on the pew.

Her dad had been a criminal.

The nature of his crime made it all the more surreal.

She stared in disbelief at the papers in her hand. His name had been Andrew Donovan, not Alex Doyle. Her last name was Donovan. Was her first name actually Olivia? Instead of inheriting a family fortune, she’d inherited a new identity.

Or rather, an old one.

Book Tour, Review, and GIVEAWAY: SELLING OUT (The Lost Girls #2) by Amber Lin

Welcome to the Selling Out Book Tour! Today I have my review as well the chance to win a $75 Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or ARe gift card!

About the Book:

Shelly Laurent escapes her life as a high-class escort, but against her better judgment she takes the scared young Ella with her. Framed for murder by her pimp and his dirty cops in retaliation, Shelly turns to the one man who could be her salvation: Detective Luke Cameron. She doesn’t know if she can trust him or if he’s just a mirage, but it’s time for her to take a stand. Just one shot, make it count, she’ll fight Ella’s demons—and face her own.

Shelly throws light on the shadows of Chicago’s underworld, challenging everything she knew and the man she’s come to love. Together, a prostitute and a cop fight for truth stronger than secrets, hope deeper than deception, and a bond more enduring than betrayal.

“Shh,” I murmured, stroking his back.

 “Shelly, goddammit.”

But his protests fell away as I pressed my breasts to his arm and my tongue to his ear. His harsh inhalation sounded broken, shattered, or maybe that was me.

I tasted salt and man, earth and spring. Slow licks alongside his lobe and upward, more suggestive than sensation, but for a man like this, anticipation would be everything. Or so I had imagined, all the times I had dreamed of it.

A small sound escaped him, somewhere between a grunt and groan. I took it as encouragement and smoothed my hands along the hard planes of his shoulders, his chest. Not anywhere near the bulge in his jeans, because this wasn’t about pleasure—it was about wanting.

Anything to get closer, I let my knees slide apart around his side, the faint heat of his body a shock to my core. His hands clenched and opened on his knees, and again, the muscles rippled beneath his darkly tanned skin. Was he restraining himself from touching me or pushing me off?

“Baby, no,” he groaned, letting his head fall back onto my shoulder.

No, I would never deserve to have him as more than a sex partner. And he had never fucked me, though I knew he wanted to. Every time he saw me, his eyes would darken and my stomach would bottom out, but we’d never touch. But maybe for one brief inconvenient moment, while the door was open and the young woman beyond it needed help, we could pretend. Maybe it could be enough.
I shut my eyes tightly and pressed a kiss to his temple. Pretend, just pretend. I would give him the sex he had craved, and in return, he’d give me memories. It would be a payment, just the same.

“You want this,” I whispered.

He shuddered in my arms; it was like hugging a wild animal, one who could just as easily maul me as cuddle.

“Can I touch you?” he whispered. “Please.”

It unraveled me, that plea. As if he understood that a little bit of my soul slipped away every time someone touched me. As if he would cherish the part I gave him.

I scrambled away from him as if burned, breathing hard. No.

No one understood, which was exactly the way I liked it. I ran a shaking hand over my face to smooth away the panic.

Sure, he knew the score better than most people. He had worked the beat as a patrol cop and then as a detective. Life as a high-priced escort wasn’t glamorous; it was sweat and blood sprinkled with glitter. But he didn’t know the full extent, and I prayed he never would. Henri didn’t sell bodies; he gutted them.

I panted against the headboard, unable to walk away but unwilling to beg. Luke remained carved in stone where I’d left him sitting on the edge of the bed. The air pulsed with doubt and longing—with sex.

“I want it to be real between us.” He spoke low and hoarse.

A quiet sound escaped me. Every caress, every pinch. Every slur ever spoken. “It’s always real. That’s the problem, Luke. It’s always too damn real.”

He hung his head, and I thought for a moment I heard him say I know, but the moment slipped away, the sweet intimacy sailed away like clouds on the horizon—never really mine.

My Review:

My Rating: 5 Stars

Dark, gritty, seductive, and action-packed, Selling Out is a fantastic follow-up to Giving it Up. Though the stories are told in a similar style, this one is definitely my favorite. I relished the opportunity to spend more time with Allie, Colin, Philip, and especially Shelly.

From it’s first moments, the book kept me glued to the pages. As the author peels away Shelley’s layers, giving the reader more insight in to who she is, she peels away layers of plot, revealing twists, turns and surprises. We get to know the characters as well as the seedy Chicago underworld, and just when everything seems too dark, too impossible, there is a pin-point of light. But nothing in Shelly’s world is simple…

For me, the best part of the book is Shelly’s character; I adore her. She is so incredibly broken, damaged, and dark, but for whatever reason, she keeps fighting for herself, for others, and for redemption. She is complex, subversive, intelligent, and beautiful. I am drawn to her, like the people around her, especially Luke. I was taken by their electric connection, and the mystery surrounding Luke.

I enjoyed this book immensely. The story, the characters, the emotion and the author’s perspective left me breathless and wrung-out. I was completely sucked in and though I was satisfied by the ending, I was disappointed when it was over.

My Review:

My Rating: 5 Stars!

Wow, what a ride! This book has tons of pulse-pounding action, criminal and political intrigue, a couple of super-sexy male leads, a fantastic heroine, hot romance and even hotter sex!

I really enjoyed Kat’s character, she’s tough and vulnerable at the same time. She’s believable and relatable, a girl I would love to hang out with, have a few glasses of wine, and let her fill me in on the hot men that seem to flock to her and will do anything to keep her safe. She has some serious choices to make: love, career, and ultimately what she wants out of life (is she doesn’t get herself killed!). And of course there’s Kade and Blane… what will she do about them. I won’t spoil the story but I’m Team Kade all the way. I can’t resist a sexy bad-boy, even if he a ruthless killer. 😉

Kade: “Neither Blane nor I are your happily-ever-after, princess. Blane will break your heart, and I’m the guy your mom warned you about. Don’t kid yourself about that.”

This suspense filled page turner is well-written and “unputdownable”. Snow deftly creates a multi-layered plot, with twist, turns, and surprises, but I was never left confused. I was swept up and left breathless by the both the action and the emotional romance. One minute, they’re running for their lives, and the next minute Blane and Kat are in a steamy sex scene, and none of it ever seems out of place. The main cast of characters are well-rounded and the author guarantees that we know them well, witnessing their strengths as well as their vulnerabilities. As far as the series, I am eagerly awaiting the next book!
